Like the D3 but with the bottom chopped off:

Same outstanding low light performance in a smaller package.

I've been waiting for this, and it certainly looks like it's a worthy upgrade. I never felt the D300 offered enough over the D200 to justify the change.
As most of my lenses are full frame, the D700 is a very attractive prospect. Might wait 6 months or so to see what happens to the price. I might even be able to convince the wife if we do a New York trip to buy one and bring it back...

Great spec. Bit worried about 150,000 shutter shots - and the D3 is now only +/- £600 more expensive. Still waiting to hear what the D3X will cost, but I bet it's a shed load - so it'll be between the 700 and the 3 that gets my money next month (when I finally get paid!).
The two things I've not read in any review about the 700 is that there is no BKT button. I don't want to be faffing around in menus for that - but it has two buttons that are 'user definable' hopefully bracketing can be assigned to one of those. Also, I've kind of gotten' used to charging my D2X only once a month (no matter how many shots I take) and the battery in the 700 looks a bit blimmin' small (compared to the D2 and the D3).
I know one can buy the battery pack but I need the money for the AFS 24-70 f2.8 G IF ED - which I just HAVE to have.

My stumbling block is the need to keep my D200 as backup, so I'd end up with two parallel systems due to the DX/FX issue - for example I can't sell off the 17-55 to help pay for the 24-70.
It can be a hindrance and a blessing in equal measures. It does mean my 12-24 gets very little use by me but does mean my 20mm gets used a lot more than it used to. The quality and smoothness of tone changes of images off the full frame sensor is brilliant, as I'm sure then Canon users would says when going from a smaller sensor to a 5D. For you wedding work it could be worth the change, you could always pick up a second hand AF 28-70 f2.8 which will have the full frame coverage and necessary quality. The thing that does manifest itself more is the requirement for top quality glass. I had not noticed the barrel distortion on my 24-85 when using it on the D2 but it becomes readily visible when used in certain circumstances on the D3.

Simpo - out of interest why can't you sell the 17-55 to finance the 24-70?
I have the 28-70 f/2.8 and I can't wait to try it on a full frame body. On the D200 it lacks a little a the wide end but not enough to be a serious problem.
On the D200 the 24-70mm won't give me sufficient wide-angle, that's all. It's also damn expensive. Much as a D700 + 12-24 + 24-70 would be nice to play with, the kit I have does what I need it to, or close enough not to warrant spending £2-3K. At least, that's my view at present; it may of course change!I have the 28-70 f/2.8 and I can't wait to try it on a full frame body.
