I wondered where is the most expensive place to run a TVR in the world?

Austria
  1. Fuel 100 octane = 1.48 euro, £1.17 per litre.
  2. Insurance costs = 1,900 euro, 1,505 pounds a year, unlimited mileage. A large chunk of that is enviromental taxes based on PS, BHP.
  3. Import tax, NOVA = 16%(+20%VAT) of the value of car. They struggled to value the car as my is the only one for spec, age etc.
  4. MOT, Pickerl = 20 euro, £16
The Austrian goverment does not like high powered cars frown It will be much cheaper when the car becomes an old timer (vintage) I can't seem to find any specialist insurers for these sort of cars either.

Hi Mark,

I hope you are well and enjoing alpine roads.

Yes, its a sad place here to own a powerful car.
But there is a trick.
Buy 3 pay 1.
The Wechselkennzeichen (one numberpate set for up to 3 cars) makes life a bit easier.
You pay for the most powerful car, max 2 others are free.
Sadly it wont get that much cheaper if your Tivi reaches vintage status (after 20years)
as only insurance would be halfed, tax stays the same.
Insurance looks quite high but it is not that bad, but seems high as it is collected
together with tax for goverment in one, and tax is far above EUR 100,-- per month alone.
As for vintage cars, they are usually more expensive because tax is 20% higher if a not
cat equipped petrol car.
Further you have the advantage that everyone is alowed to drive your car
(also if not stolen ;-) as insurance is car not driver related.
But there are still worse countries for powerful cars: Ireland.

If you do not use the Tiv in wintertime you can return the numberplates to your insurance
and have nothing to pay in insurance and tax. Minimum time is 3 months.

How is life for you here in Austria?

Best regards,

Life is good, thanks Martin. The TVR really chews up the mountain roads and this is where the power really shows. biggrin much fun.

I have two insurance policies. One for the Tiv and a second for my 'normal' car.
The TiV car goes for winterschlafen and so I hand my number plate back and the insurance refund the outstanding, unused months.

Anyway, -20C + 1-3meter snow + TVR + salt = disaster and rot

Seemed to be cheaper doing it this way than insuring for the whole year for both cars on one policy. They take the cash for the most powerful, as you said. Which annoying as it causes the least damage to the enviroment due to the few kilometers used.

My car has cats and so hopefully it will be cheaper when its vintage, assmuming the rules do not change by then and my cats are still working (??)

Martin, where are you based? I see lower Austria in your profile but what is your nearest big place? Just trying figure out how many TVR's are here and where they are based... maybe meet up some day so I do not feel so lonely frown

hello,

I'm currently living in Vienna with a 98 Griff 500 and loving it.

Roads are awesome and unlike where I used to live in Berkshire, you don't need wait till 11pm to find empty roads.

I'm not here permanently so I'm running my UK rego, so cheap vintage insurance and no speeding or parking fines for me smile unless they catch me in person frown

Happy to meet up for an Austrian "Roar" or "Growl" smile

Anthony

Ooo, that makes three that I know of.

  1. There's an Austrian with one two? TVR's in Klagenfurt.
  2. Mark aka m4rk, 94 Chimaera 500, Villach
  3. Martin aka Griffithy, Griffith 500, lower Austria
  4. Anthony aka kbear, 98 Griffth 500, Vienna

I think I'll start a new thread for an Austrian roll call
