Most french "nationales" have switched to "departementales" as Gvnmt does not want to finance such roads any more and asked local governments (départements) to finance them.

Legendary roads such as N138, N6 or N7 are therefore now called "D... whatever"
Absolutely stupid !

In the same way , French plates will change soon and the numbers refering to where a car come from will soon disappear... No more 75 for Paris, 72 for La Sarthe...
