Just had to have two slow punctures repaired (saving them up!). The spare had no tube in it and was leaking from the rim - no real surprise there. The tyre on the car did have a tube (all the others have) and was leaking from around the valve seat.
The guy took the tube out and (for both tyres) painted a load of black goo around the rim to seal it and told me that they aren't allowed to put tubes onto modern rims (not that mine class as modern).
The question is, do the rest of you guys run with tubes or not? Have you had problems?
The wheels are standard 15" finned TVR alloys.

Phil,
Aluminium wheels often develop bead leaks. After cleaning the oxidation from the flange of the wheel with a wire brush, you can use a product sold as "aluminum jelly" here in the states to remove any remaining Al oxide. Then, BEFORE applying any paint, use a good aluminium primer such as Zinc Chromate or Zinc Phosphate (available from aero supply houses here).
This is only one small additional step but will add years before the corrosion will return. Alternately, you could use an epoxy primer.
Did this with my "T slot" wheels and they did fine without tubes for a long time.
Good luck,
Bernard.

I had 2 new tyres fitted March/April 2007 onto the compomotive split rims that Taimar SE's were fitted with, 2 tubes came out and 2 new tubes went back in no questions asked by the fitters who specialised in alloy wheels, bling Range Rovers mainly, I went there so as not to incurr any damage to my wheels. I have seen some butcher jobs on alloys in the past.
