My STW-classifieds-special commuter bike is coming together nicely now. The frame and forks turned up, and I've roughly chucked them together with the bits I could salvage off my old Marin (with the cracked frame).

The Marin managed to give up its brakes (not in the picture, they need mounting adapters), bars, stem and wheels, but the cranks and BB were fked, so I'm split between getting a half-decent second hand set off STW/eBay or getting a cheapy new set from CRC (along with the rest of the massive order I'm going to be making now).

Hmmmmm... scratchchin

ETA: *argh* just gave almost £200 to CRC yikes

You could get a whole geared groupset for that...

s :P

To be fair, the order did include a few bits for the trip to Morzine in a couple of months time.

Is now a good time to point out that last year I bought a single speed off ebay. Voodoo Wanga frame, mildleburn cranks, Avid Juicy 7s,Pace RC31s, reasonable bars, stem, seatpost, saddle etc, all for £450.

Worked out the total build value at about £1200.

Phill.

yikes

Total spend so far is still less than £250 (not including the bits for the other bike in that CRC order).
Frame, forks and headset came from STW classifieds.
Brakes, stem, handlebars and wheels came from the old Marin. Almost everything else is in the CRC order. I reckon fully built it should still cost less than £300.

Well the CRC order arrived today... and I assembled all the remaining bits this evening.

Having never ridden a rigid steel bike (or anything that didn't have big knobbly tyres), I'm actually pretty damned impressed having taken it for a quick spin around the block - it's bloody quick!

Can't wait to take it to work tomorrow biggrin

Pics later...

It's an Inbred frame with matching On-One rigid forks. Bars and stem I've no idea about - they're not branded and came attached to my old Marin. Wheels are Mavic 517s rims on old disk hubs that have long lost any identifying markings - with the odd ding from two weeks in Morzinewink Gearing is 44/16 on some old chainset that I dug out of the garage and a singlespeed spacer/cog conversion kit on the back. Currently running just a front brake - an old 185mm (I think) Magura Julie hydraulic. The rear end has no tabs for mounting a caliper, so either I go out and get one of those fiddly adapters that mount on the rear axle, or I just do without.

The ride in this morning was a bit of a cheat - I rode to the station and took the train most of the way, so the real test is going to be on the way home this evening. Can't wait biggrin
