??????Jess... as long as it's the right grade and fully synthetic, stick any oil in, it'll be fine!
Mine's on half Mobil, half Spanish something or other at the mo'.
I saw the light when TVR changed recommendations... surprisingly as they changed preferred oil suppliers!
However, Mazola is not recommended, though will cook a nice fish supper in about 40 minutes

As long as it's a half decent brand, no reason that I can think of or have heard of apart from personal preference.
Some people's cars seem to use less when thicker grade used, some when thinner.
I don't bring the Griff in to work that often, especially now that I have only 1000 miles to last me til feb on my insurance... and no, they won't increase it... they say they don't do over 7500!!!
Looks like they will be losing a potential long term customer in about 8 weeks then!

Here's a tip...
Those good ol' boys at V8 Developments recommend Unipart Green 20W/50.
It's designed for older engines, but apparently (from repeated tests on their bench dyno) it performs much better than Mobil 1 at high temperatures. They swear by it.
And here's the good bit...
It's not available everywhere, but you'll get it from the parts depertment at any Rover dealer...
...at the pricely sum of approximately £7 for 4.55 litres!!!

Unfortunately mineral oil such as this tends to die with the temps that TVR engines suffer from and this turns the oil to sludge which is not a very good lubricant. The end result is that the oil needs changing every 2-3000 miles or less if it does track days. otherwise there is no protection. I use a mineral in the 520 and I change it about every few hundred miles as the stuff degrades badly. It is used because it is very fuel tolerant and copes with the excess fuelling needed to stop pre-detonation from washing the oil of the ineternal surfaces. Great stuff but I buy in by the pallet load and am forever changing it. Costs more than the Griff for oil as a result even at £30 for 15W50 Motorsport Mobil 1 from Halfords.
The older engine theory is also a bit of a misnomer as the serp engines had different oil pumps and oil ways fitted so the lubrication part of the engine is actually quite modern. The cam and engine wear problems were reported/known in the 1970s when Duckhams 20W50 was the oil... It is not as black and white as many would like to make out.
Big big section on the activities of the oil police in the bible.

Mobil 1 5w50 was the origional version, they later changed it to 0w40 but have also brought out the motorsport 15w50...
You won't find 5W/50 (except in France) and that's almost certainly not what's in your engine at the mo'. Check last service receipt to see what they used, or tell us where it was serviced and someone on here might be able to tell you what they usually use. Halfords do usually sell both 0w40 and 15w50 Mobil 1, so do larger Esso petrol stations.
