What Camera For A Starter ?

Hi all, a mate and myself are seriously considering getting into photography as i can't get enough of some peoples superb photography and frequently think, if only i could do that, so well, heres my chance.
Basically looking for a bit of advice on what cameras are the best for a starter, not too complicated but also produces great quality photos. Ideally at a price of around £200-£250.
Had a look at Sonys, Nikons etc on eBay but tbh the facts and figures mean nothing to me.

Personally I'd recommend the Nikon D50. I've had some pretty nice results from mine....seems to be much better than the newer D40.

If you're after a DSLR then you'll have to find out what they mean
