I've got the idea that 'testing' is illegal on a public highway, but I'm unclear exactly how testing is defined. For instance I've been told that being seen going round the same roundabout more than a couple of times is likely to get you pulled. There's also the obvious 'due care and attention' issue if you're fiddling with the thing while you're driving, or driving too fast/swerving/braking etc trying to pull some 'G'. But there's nothing to say you can't have the car instrumented and drive the same as normal. One advantage of this weather is the tyres don't tend to squeal so much! I have one of those G-tech meters and I was very dissapointed with the results, there is no calibration or pitch compensation and the results were not really credible (sub 5 seconds to 60 with a very mediocre start on cold tyres - don't think so!). I've got an AC22 now and it seems a lot more realistic and is also dual axis and self levelling with built-in pitch/roll compensation. The speed, distance and power values it shows tie up very well with other sources like the speedo, distance markers and rolling road. The standard 0-60, standing quarter and so on are interesting, but the real power of this device comes from the ability to capture the acceleration continuously for a minute or so and then analyse it off-line. My advice is get your money back on the G-Tech as an unwanted present and put it towards an AC-22. Cheers, Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Anyone else get a performance meter in their Christmas stocking? I found a GTech Pro in mine, which is tremendous fun. Probably illegal to use on the road, mind (anyone know?). After a couple of tries, I've got 5.78 0-60 on a standard Elise. 5.98 on a standard Impreza Turbo. There's definitely more in both cars, though. I'm fairly sympathetic on the launch... Does anyone know the dry weight of a standard Elise? Anyone tried out the AP22?

I think that they pull you for going too many times round a roundabout because they suspect that you may be a bit pissed or confused. If you're going round it repeatedly with squealing tyres, I think that they would probably do you for wreckless driving. I agree with you about the G-Tech. I had one, and it wasn't much cop. Considering the price difference of £70 or so, it's well worth moving up to the proper bit of kit. I suppose it depends what you want it for. If it's to impress your mates down the pub, go for the G-Tech, as it'll give you flattering results. In your case Peter, you want to get information that will help you improve the performance of your car and your driving technique, so you need a more professional piece of kit. James

Sadly, I didn't find out about the AP22 until a few days after the GTech had been ordered - looks like the extra features definitely justify the extra cost. Second-hand GTech Pro anyone?

I bought an AP22 at Wroughton on the 3rd Feb and I'm still trying to find a deserted 1/4 mile stretch of road to play with it. Other figures have borne out what I thought though and it appears good value. Is there someone meant to writing an Excel macro for use with it?

Martin was talking about setting up a user group to share this sort of thing. He also said somebody was writing a macro to speed up the import to Excell - but it's not too tedious to do it manually if you're only doing it a couple of times. Setting up standard charts is largely a matter of personal taste and you can then just copy the chart sheets. Cheers, Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)
