Whatever route you choose the equation needed to calculate a budget is the same: Work out the cheapest way to purchase all of the parts needed for your spec build, double it and add your age as a percentage of the overall budget minus a quarter, then times by inflation. Simple
Oh you are a card, tent-mate

It's true insofar that you would have to spend outrageous amounts of time / money to get the engine to run as an 'FSI' unit. Both the Bosch ecu's (yes - it has 2!) can be cracked but it ain't cheap!
Contrary to (some) opinion, the engine will still function with an aftermarket ecu, a set of individual throttle bodies and some machine work to plug up the old FSI injector 'holes'. This involves stripping it right back to the block, a water pump and a few pipes - helps you lose over 35kg!
I would be surprised if this route cost more than £3.5k to complete (including engine if you shop around!). I'm hoping that I will get a few hundred quid back on unused engine parts that were removed.
It has been done in a couple of other cars and BHP figures have been 405 - 415. Not bad as reports suggest that most 'normal' RS4's fail to break the 400 mark!
I'll be happy with those sorts of figures as I'm looking to get the overall weight of the vehicle stripped right down to the basics... and 8250rpm sounds like fun!

There is no fascination, or a great comparison to be held with the LS7... the LS7 is a fantastic engine and is certainly more powerful than the Audi lump.
The only reason that I'm using the RS4 is that I got one at a great price (an absolute steal), the engineering is superb, it's light, it's smaller, and it revs to 8250.

Ok, you got your engine at a good price, but what about all the mods to put it into the Ultima, wont they be expensive putting your budget at a big figure, would it be better for someone else who hasn’t got there engine at a good price to go LS7.The only reason that I'm using the RS4 is that I got one at a great price (an absolute steal), the engineering is superb, it's light, it's smaller, and it revs to 8250.
When the engines in are you keeping the engine naturally aspirated or changing the spec for more power?
LS7 engine are not what I'd call mega money either £5K ish for a crate engine delivered and for a built all singing all dancing: cranks, rods, pistons, custom cam, stand alone etc is about £6-£7K also delivered and punching upwards of 600-800hp
For those with a smaller budget run an LS2 450+hp change out of £4500 delivered, well worth the few extra ££££'s when your building the car also from a resale point of view!!!!!
