Waterpump Hose

I have a 1993 SC which has always taken a while to warm up, I recently improved things considerably by fitting a new thermostat.
One thing is puzzling me ! there is a hose which goes from the top of the waterpump to the swirl pot, now surely the pump is always pushing coolant through that hose and therefore through the radiator even when the engine is cold and the stat is closed ? that would explain the problem surely, what do you think would happen if I removed that hose and blanked off both unions on the pump and swirl pot ? I can't see what the point is of that hose, what do you think ?

the top hose carries water from the swirl pot INTO the engine. When the thermostat is shut the pump circulates the same water around the engine which warms it up quicker. when the engine is hot the stat opens and the pump sucks cold water in. Just realised - do you mean the little small diameter hose? It seems to bypass the thermostat as you say, although I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just to prevent the pump over-pressuring the engine coolant and allowing a vent back to the rad cap? I don't know. Don't know why Ford would have added a hose they didn't need!

it is that small hose which does bypass the thermostat which is confusing me, I can't see that it does anything at all!!!!Cheers.....Tony..
