I am looking for a Canon 400d. Some I have seen on e bay have Rebel XT included in the model description. What is the difference?

Pretty sure thats what they're called in the USA. Same camera though I think but I'd opt for a UK one.

So 400 Rebel XTI is an import. Think I should stick with the UK 400D?

I have looked at ebay etc looking for a 350D or 400D and to be honest you are better just buying from a retailer.

I got my 400D from Amazon, £374 ish, free P+P plus you can claim £45 cashback from Canon if you buy before the end of June.

Hope this helps.

I had decided not to buy from e bay as they mostly sell for more than retail, (allowing for the Canon Cashback) Why do buyers do that?
Any way, thought I would buy from John Lewis as they are almost as cheap as anyone, plus they are fairly local, and painless to deal with.
Also - I have several lenses from my old EOS 650. EF mounts. I am lead to believe they will fit the 400. If this is the case, are thay as good as newer lenses, or should I upgrade them too?

From the reviews I have seen of the 450D, it is quite a bit better than the 400D. The 400D was more like a slightly updated 350D. The 450D's new 18-55mm IS kit lens is reputedly as good as the old one was bad, if you see what I mean.

If you fancy a gamble (check out the feedback) the Ebay Canon Refurb shop is open again: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet_Canon-EOS-SL...

New kit lens is pretty decent as opposed to the dodgy old one.

450D adds 2 more megapixels whilst keepig the noise close to the 400D.

Also adds spot meeter and improved AF + bigger LCD and live view. It uses SD cards and a new batter/grip.

IMO its not a huge step up , the 350-400d was more (and not just a slightly updated 350d).

Warranty on Canon camera bodies only valid in country in which item was intended to be sold. So a Canon XT or XTi has no warranty in the UK. However, warranties on Canon lens are world-wide.

I bought my Rebel XT in a camera shop in New York a few months ago as it was just over half the price of the UK.

IIRC there's no difference in the camera itself, and I go to the US often enough that the warranty thing isn't really an issue.

Next trip I'm going to splash out on the 70-200 f2.8 IS lens I've wanted for a long time but can't justify the UK price for!

I use the Rebal XT, no problems, lovely little camera, when compared to the likes of a 30D or 40D, makes you wish you had better. However starting out i would be really tempted to ditch the 350D and opt for the 400D, performance wise there's little difference, but the bigger screen on the back is so much better to work with. Very difficult to check sharpness etc on the 350D, and if you have the Info up on review, so it shows the histogram you need a magnifying glass!

Not sure what you budget is, but the 1000D looks to be a great little camera, but if you wanted to avoid new... dont bother reading this biggrin

I think there is still quite a price difference between the 400D and 450D so the OP might as well get the former unless they are happy to spend the extra.
