How much is my V6 GTV worth?
Discussion
I have a new job and will have to commute about 20K miles a year and the fuel costs for the GTV would be too much so it has to go.
It is a silver 2001 24v V6 six speed with a full red interior and aero kit.

Not as bright as it looks in the photo.

It has done 95k miles but is in very good condition and has had the following done in the 20 months I have had it,
Ragazzon silenced centre and un-silenced rear stainless exhaust,
poly-bushed rear suspension and Bilstien sport shocks, air flow meter, driver and passenger window motors/mechanisms, cam belt service last week and various other bits and bobs like engine mounts.
It burns no oil, sounds great, handles superbly and I love it but as I said it has to go so what should I be asking for it?

I bought mine from a dealer (I know, I know more expensive etc) in Dec for £5500, it had 62k on the clock but needed a new exhaust like 2 months after I bought it. Has red leather, but not the whole red thing yours has going on (would that add value?)
I would say around the £5000 mark, perhaps a bit less cos of the mileage. Dunno really. See what others are going for (I refuse to look now!)
But you know you dont really want to sell it at all.

You are right I do not want to sell it but I recon it would cost me about £8K a year to use it to commute to my new job and that is too much. I would say around the £5000 mark, perhaps a bit less cos of the mileage. Dunno really. See what others are going for (I refuse to look now!)

I think £5k is probably about right, the car is better than others I have seen with far less mileage and the poly-bush/ Bilstein combination utterly transforms the handling without ruining the ride.
I am not sure what the effect of the red interior is on the value of the car, it is quite rare and most people who have seen it seem to like it.

I just had my suspension pollybushed, how much does it cost to get the bilsten shocks? And its definately improved the handling? Hmmmmmmm.....
8k is a lot of money to spend on commuting. Too much really. Go and get an Elise, many mpg plus fun, but no practicality.
The shocks cost £550 plus about £300 fitting so not cheap. I always felt that the car was under damped and a bit bouncy/wallowy, with the Bilsteins it is more jiggly at low speeds but is much more controlled, rolls far less and turns in better.8k is a lot of money to spend on commuting. I thought of an Elise but it is still not a cheap car to run so I plan to get a Grande Punto 1.9 jtd 16v sporting for commuting and some sort of kit car as a weekend toy.
Give me a shout if you want to try my car before I sell it.

Robert.
Good luck with selling it.
The Punto sounds like a good car but Last time I saw you you seemed to be going more along the lines of a 355
The sad thing about your car is its just regestered under the stupid road tax system so most people will try to find one a few months older so they can save £240 a year.

I still fancy a 355, the idea is to reduce the amount I send on day to day driving and if the new job works out well then buy a nice weekend toy.The Punto sounds like a good car but Last time I saw you you seemed to be going more along the lines of a 355

You are right about the road tax thing, it is a pain in the arse but it is not law yet so we will just have to see.

You know what really grates? I had mine sat in the garage unregistered for a week so as to register it on 01/03/01 and thus save a month's tax and get a "Y" (rather than "X") reg into the bargain.Stupid bloody "head" decisions... had I gone with the "heart" option and registered it a week earlier I wouldn't now be caught in

Pooh, if I was back in Glasgow and not stuck in Portsmouth, I would probably be first in the queue for your car - I'm currently looking for a 3.0 V6 in silver exterior/red interior or red exterior/tan interior, with 17 inch teledials and aero kit.
From what I've seen in the classifieds, people are asking anywhere between £4000-5500 for GTVs of similar age/mileage to yours. I've seen a couple for less, but they've had cloth interiors (for the love of God, why?).
Good luck with the sale - hopefully the next owner looks after it as much as you have!

Thanks for that, it is a very good car but it's hard to know what it is worth. From what I've seen in the classifieds, people are asking anywhere between £4000-5500 for GTVs of similar age/mileage to yours. I've seen a couple for less, but they've had cloth interiors (for the love of God, why?).

Portsmouth is not that far, I flew down to Southampton, bought a car and drove home the same day a few years ago.

The problem you have with selling the V6 now is the whole uncertainty with petrol. I can attest to this; as most of you know, I've been on the lookout for the right V6 for quite a while now, but nothing has come up in the area that I am able to search in.
Now, with the accelerated price of fuel, added to the hike in tax for post 01 cars, buying a 'cheap' bargain performance car isn't so appealing. If you only have/want to spend in the region of £6k on a car, I think it's fair to say that in the main this sort of person doesn't have loads of cash to then blast on ever-increasing fuel. If they did have that sort of cash, I reckon they'd be spending more than £6k on a car in the first place.
I am saying this from my current experience; I am yearning for one of these, but I am buggered now if I am going to spend potentially £1.50 per litre by the end of the summer on a car that realistically does low 20s MPG. Not as an everyday driver at least. If I wanted a fun car for the weekend, where filling the tank is seen as more of a leisure pursuit as opposed to a 'real' outgoing, I would now get a TVR (but I have no garage in which to store it), not a relatively sensible Alfa coupe.
So what am I looking for now, you may ask. Well, for the short term I am maintaining the 145 as it's such a giggle to drive, and owes me very little. If it dies it dies, and I will replace it. Not with a V6 though.... I'm ashamed to say I am now considering 1.8 T Sport Celicas (shudder), and even nearly new Fiesta ST 2.0. Both still quite fun, a little bit quick, economical when I need them to be, reliable, easy to fix, and not too shocking on the new tax laws.
I hate being bullied by the government, and hammered at the pumps, but I also need to eat and pay the mortgage first.
So sell the V6 for £3k and I may consider it....
