A friend and I are talking about getting a track day car at the moment and this caught my eye in the PH ads:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/512432.htm

Generally speaking, what mods need to be carried out before they're suitable for track use (for fun I hasten to add, not trying to set any lap records)?

What are parts costs like?

Are there any bits which are prone to breaking? Anything to look for?

Finally - we'd be looking to drive to and from the track I think, can anyone recommend a good insurer for something like that? Does the 'rocco classify as a classic?

chris buy a mk2 golf.

just like a rocco but a hell of a lot easier to modify for tracking.

look into the GTi Championship, run by 750 MotorClub. Thats what me and a friend are entering.

roccos are terrible cars

How so? (Not an expert on either, you may well be right....)

My understanding was that the rocco was based on the mk1 GTi and had drove in a fairly similar manner, but whereas a decent mk1 GTi is silly money, you'd struggle to find a Scirocco for more than £1k.

I am very much a VW geek, although have spent more times with polos than any other models.

Your right in that a rocco is similar but they are not a mk1 golf with abit on the back, in the sense a Mk1 Jetta was.

£1000 will buy you an extremely nice mk2 golf gti.If my mk2 golf was anything more than a rolling shell I would show you. Depending on how much mechanical ability you have depends on what you can buy. Me and my mate had the biggest st-heap of a mk2 but we rebuilt the engine and welded new panels all over the car [in the right place we didn't just spontaneously begin welding pannels]

Mk2 golf were fun cars when they were new. 150~bhp at 1000kg makes a great track toy. The understeer is hideous and the lift-off understeer is a pain but they really are great cars to drive.
