Featuring a 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, 7- point wide area AF system and up to 3fps continuous JPEG shooting until the memory card is full, the EOS 1000D represents a more affordable entry point to the world of EOS cameras – whilst taking full advantage of over 70 years of imaging expertise.

With the lightest body of any digital EOS camera, the EOS 1000D incorporates a range of technologies used in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor, and Live View mode.

Not checked the specs, but how does that differ from the 450D?

Having bought a 400D in February I could really think I should have waited, but with technology isn't that always the case!!

I was thinking exactly that! Same lens bundle, same CCD, same processor chip, live view... ?

The 450D+ short IS zoom kit can be had for £460 from Dixons etc with whatever vouchers they currently have going. Maybe they boobed with the 450D's designation and people aren't upgrading.

Dont forget prices above are RRP and by the time it hits the shops it'll be priced below the 450D level.... RRP on 450D body is £600 compared to £500 for the 1000D so i'd expect this to retail at around £100 less than the 450D in the shops.

Have noticed a few differences in spec (2m less pixels, smaller 2.5inch screen, 7 instead of 9 point autofocus) but yes it is fairly similar. Would guess this will be aimed at real first time DSLR users with more basic controls...

I have been doing some digging (mainly at dpreview.com). It is basically a 400D that has been updated a bit.

450D 12.2 MP
400D/1000D 10.1 MP

450D 9 point AF
400D/1000D 7 point AF

450D Metering: Evaluative, Partial, Spot, CWA
400D/1000D Metering: Evaluative, Partial, CWA

450D 3.5fps
400D/1000D 3 fps

450D 3" LCD
400D/1000D 2.5" LCD

You get the idea, it is a 400D with slightly updated software, Live View, bigger battery and noise reduction. Given that it is due in August (after the summer holidays really) then they are really going to have to drop quite a bit of cash from the RRP. Sounds like they perhaps intended launching this with the 450D but got caught out.

I dont understand Canon at the minute.

Like Nikkon they have released a few identical models very close to each other. I say identical as in essence they are.

Unlike the 350d that was around for years proving a good return on initial price these updates are surely damaging stability. Why are both Nikon and Canon doing this?

Have a baby, a mid, a mid-high and a high

I certainly will not be considering the replacement 5d (not that I would need to really). I saved a bundle on my body as rumours were abound of a replacement. 18 months later I'm still not regretted it as they haven't done it. 5d been around for years now, why cant they learn from this? Like when BMW release a model you have at least 5 years with it

I agree with Stigmundfreud on this. Canon's release policy seems to be more based around simply lumping new models out into the market with little/no advance in the actual kit.

This one looks like it's been released just in time for the shelves at Jessops ahead of the summer holiday season.

I agree with you both there - in reality the 400D hadn't been out all that long when I bought mine in February, it was still possible to get a 350D at the time. I knew the 450D was coming out but the indicated price was (and the actual still is) beyond what I wanted to pay, but the 1000D has a couple of features I would have liked - live view in particular.

When I come to upgrade/replace it I will think twice as whatever I am thinking of may be replaced by something better very quickly.

It seems canon are incapable of making a realy cut down piece of dSLR hardware. They've done all the dev for the digicIII etc already and it priobably costs no more to use it.

Do they redevelop a new 6 or 8 mp APS-C sensor? No. Shutter? Body?

It's marketing pressure. Every year the industry demands something new, Product Managers need something to launch, and Joe Public is equally to blame by saying 'I'm not buying the ABC3000 because it's been out six months so it's out of date and there'll be an ABC4000 out soon'. The manufacturers need to keep selling cameras, so the quicker the product cycle, the more boxes they shift.

Somehow this has all happened since things went digital - possibly because digital imaging has vastly extended the user base for cameras. The new users are (largely I suspect) less interested in photography as an art/science, and simply want more buttons and widgets.

5d = 4 yearss old
1dmk2 lasted 3
350d lasted for 4 years

all stable platforms subsquently only the 1d has had a substantial leap forward in updates. Nothing for the 5d and the 350d is hardly behind when it comes to the 400, 450 and 1000 is it but its been enough to make me think twice about investing in my next generation upgrade

But the 450D has barely hit the stores. This is purely co try combat the cheap entry level nikons etc. But canon dont sem to be able to cut much out and save costs.

The 300D was still being made when the 350D was current, the same with 350D/400D and now 400D/450D. Bizarrely at not much lower a price than the current model. I think the 1000D has been rushed out so they can push the 450D (previously the entry level machine) up market to compete with the imminent Nikon D90.

The 400D had pretty much the same time on the market that the previous models had. Announcement dates:

20th August 2003 300D (18 months)
17th February, 2005 350D (18 months)
24th August 2006 400D (17 months)
23rd January 2008 450D

They seem to have taken the worst bits of the 400d and 450d and put them together. Then put a price in the shops (ok, it will come down in time) that is higher than a 450d making it pretty much pointless.

Just seen this for sale and was lost to where it had come from.

I must get out from under my stone.

http://www.jessops.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx...

Jessop's say that it's arriving tomorrow so...22nd July.

Seems to be a £50 price difference when compared to the 450D (on Jessops - body only).

So the Canon line up goes.

When did they start shipping an IS lens as part of a kit?

Is that a response to Sony's in-body stabilisation?

It doesn't make sense to me either. The 1000D seems to have lower spec than the 450D and is more expensive. I'd go for the 450D over the 1000D for an extra £50.

The reason that Canon are concentrating on the entry level market so much is that generally speaking once someone buys an entry level DSLR they tend to be very loyal to the brand and upgrade through the range as their photography (and income) progresses.

In my 450d or 40d readings I have read a lot about the 1000d, it seems that canon are aiming for people with a p&s who want adslr (quite how tha works I don't know, maybe the controls are easier or something). I was under the impresison that the 400d was being dropped.

Comparing the specs side by side there is very little between the 1000d and the 450d (yes I know about a few more pixels and better af and a few other bits).

Note I do not claim to understand any of it, the only thing this does do is further errode the value of my 350d! grrr

I really want to know what the replacement for the 50d will be....

Just remember davidd that it is not the camera that makes a great pic but the 10" behind it! I to use a 350D which I've had for seemingly ages. It is still a great camera and until you outgrow it (and that won't be because of no of pixels or live view) or it dies keep it.

Money is best spent on upgrading glass than a camera body!
