Posted this in gen gas but dint get a great reponse.....any help or comments would be appreciated:-

My uncles VW 1.9tdi panel vans gear box went yesterday after 61,000 miles. Think the warranty is 60,000!!!!! its all up to date with regard to the services etc and he has had it since new. Do you think this is low I thought you could expect at least 120-150,000 out of these gearboxes these days.

Any chance of it being covered under some different part of the warranty or fixed as good will gesture???

Any help would be great my uncles struggling at the mo so this doesnt help!!!

Cheers

Dr G

Is it under 3 years old?

If it's in sound condition and looks like it's been taken good care of I imagine it's well worth a letter to VW requesting some goodwill towards the cost of the repair.

If however it has bald front tyres, knocking CVs and an almost dead clutch...

I don't have any experience with VW but Audi are generally quite reasonable about contributing to repairs were warranties are very recently expired.

Yer best bet is to check vw. sometimes with certain parts over 3 but under 5 they will offer good will gestures.
With it being 1 owner and if its in good condition then i would say it should be good for over 100k
also check there was no recalls or anything. Check on honestjohn.

Ive got a 1.9 tdi ( i think very simular engine/box) golf on 120k and the gearbox is crisp (touchwood)
