Looking for some advice (and will be calling Adrian Venn later).

I took my 1600M for an MOT on Friday, it passed !! that's the good bit. But the garage seem to have stirred the gears around as I now have random selection of first and reverse (it seems first could be in a number of places!!), second and third are sort of OK but 4th gear has completly gone.!!

The box was fine before I took the car in, and the garage are not putting their hands up to the fact that they may of well caused the damage.

The box was reconditioned (I believe) when the car was rebuilt 3500 mls ago - so it hasn't exactly been to the moon and back.

My local garage (they don't offer MOT's but have a guy there that has 40 years knowledge of cars - so is handy with a spanner around classics etc.)

At the moment it looks like they are going to drop the gearbox out and fit a reconditioned one. Any suggestions what this should be? and should I look at this as a time to 'upgrade' to a fancy five speed box.

My 1600M has been fitted with 5 speed and is absolutely brilliant.
Have got a drawing of the mounting adapter plate the guy used if it could be of use to you.

willie, looking at all suggestions - it seems a good idea to 'upgrade' to 5 speeds if I need to change the gearbox. Do you know what other work was required to marry the engine, gearbox and diff. Or was it smooth running. I wont be touching the spanners myself, so it will be a local garage doing the 'dirty' work.

Can send you drawing of adapter plate (from your profile I assume you are able to read a autocad dwg file !!!!).
Best if you do a search on 'Ford Capri Laser' web site, go to Q&A ask the question and you will be bombarded with replys.
Or just search the site, work has been described many timeson there.
Alternative is to ask Adrian Venn for price to do job.
Alun.

Cheers Alun, i'll ask the question and wait for the wave of responses.

I looked through my piles of manuals, books etc. that came with the car, and it looks as though I (or should i say my mechanic) will have all the references that are required.

I've spoken with Adrian, and he's spoken with my mechanic. And hopefully there is a resolution without dropping the box... and the expense of a replacement !

Sounds like the black plastic? ball which the gaerstick pivots on has disintigrated. Easy option if this is the case is buy a quick shift stick from a ford rally supplies place (about £50).Dewi

Yep this could be the case. It happened to me a few years ago. The ball
was completly gone and it felt like I was stiring in a bowl of soup!
Remove the gear lever and at the end there must be a plastic ball(mine was light yellow). If it is gone buy a new lever and it should work again.

It depends what type of gearbox it is. A quickshift for a Type 2 or 3 gearbox may be about £50 but for the 2000E 3 rail box I think you'll find it's nearer £200. When mine disintegrated, on my 2000E box, I couldn't get a replacement from anywhere. Luckily I had enough left of my old one to get someone to make me a replacement on a lathe. Also these bushes (2000E) fit in the gearbox and don't come on a new gearstick so buying a quickshift wouldn't help.

PS Dewi are you the Dewi I met at Brooklands last year ?

One of the 2nd gears tooth had sheered off and was blocking 4th gear! So a refurbished box and new clutch has gone in.

I fitted a 5 speed to my 1600M about 20 years ago. If your 1600M has the cable clutch - you are laughing as the bellhousing is the same as the Sierra - so to swap - just bolt in new g/box make a new rear carrier for the mount which I made out of a length of 1/8th mild steel 1" x 1" cut in to three pieces to bring the mount back and down - then you need the yoke and a new prop. A very worthwhile conversion. I seem to remember using an odd clutch plate but I was runing a BDA type clutch cover which was bigger than standard I think

I didn't fit one to my Vixen but I did fit one to my Anglia 105E wich had a hydraulic slave cylinder. Making this work took a little more effort but I made a bracket allow the original slave cylinder to mount to the later bellhousing and modified the fork to work from a pushrod instead of a cable (from memory)
