some of the shots i took while at the 2008 event. strugled with the fence all weekend as the auto focus kept finding the fence, so ended up in manual most of the time.

Dont know what camera and lens combo you're using but as you've seen, the fence is a problem

You can shoot/focus through them if you're close enough. This is taken from behind and through the fence at Melbourne, Donington using a D80 and 70-300mm lens at 260mm

i was using the following
Nikon D70 with the 80-200 f2.8 afd,
after reviewing the shots i think i might need something a little longer to get into the thick of things.

the shots where it did focus was when i was close to the fence. from further back up the grandstand i had no chance.

couldnt get enough room on the f1 days to get any panning shots. not to mention it was a stinking hot 40°, so i was happy enough to sit in the stand.

which lense is the 70-300

Gotcha

I think (and seeing as I only picked a camera up in Jan, it really is think) that it's more down to position than lens length, ie not being close enough to punch through the fence

I could equally have done the shot I took above on the 50-200 I've got but because I was literally half a foot from the fence it went through it

Your other problem from the shots is I doubt there's enough time to pan and accurately focus on the car at race pace, and the camera is trying to work out what you're about to take a pic of. The Melbourne ones, cars are doing maybe 30-40 mph and cornering, so it's easier to pick them off. And I think the shutter speed is probably a bit slow on the ones you've taken. I struggle with the opposite problem, cant bring the shutter speed down enough to get both motion blur and focus

The 70-300 is this one

If that didnt work try searching for Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens, but again I think it's not a lens issue per se
