If you are not a "power user" of PS, then you may want to have a look at Paint Shop Pro X2 (12).

Very reasonable price (especially if you choose US to download from, so you pay in US$) and a free 30 day full trial to see if it does what you need.

I tend to use PSP X2 as the "default" choice, only firing up CS2 if there is something I specifically need it for. As a guide, I can't recall opening Photoshop this year...

And after acquiring a copy from a friend why not steal a car next - after all, your neighbour has a nicer car than you and that's just not right.

Ah, another copyright infringement = terrorism type response.

To the other poster, making such suggestions, along with any discussions of 'pirating' software goes against the posting rules, and will get deleted.

If you are a poor student and can't afford to splash out on £4-600 on a copy. Alias don't mind students making copies as long as the institutions pay the full £5000 for a license.

As for the stealing a car comment, none of our neighbours have better cars than us!

Yes, but that wasn't what you suggested first. There is a difference between making copies of media whilst having a valid license, and 'pirating' software.

Shocked to find several PHers advocating what is basically theft.

Mattt - where did you get terrorism from? Where did I mention that? As someone who makes a living working for a software company I can tell you that software piracy hurts me and all my colleagues directly in my pocket. Still it's not a real crime is it.

I said "aquire" not steal or buy or anything. He/she won't make any money from it but Adobe will when we come to upgrade etc.

Folks - let's be very clear here - PH does not support, in any way shape or form software theft or piracy - so please be aware of what 'suggestions' you post.

Although software licensing agreements from company to company, some very strict, some very relaxed - the general rule of thumb is that only 1 copy of any application can only be installed on one machine at any one time. If you have 2 machines at home, then you can usually install on both, if and only if one of those machines is only in use at any one time.

But as I say - that's a general rule of thumb - and licensing agreements will vary. Adobe tends to be at the stricter end of the scale.

You'll probably find most people who use PS for their work have had a pirated copy at some point in their career.
On personal level the more people that "mess around" with it at home will in the long term boost sales when those people progress to real job where the serious licenses are bought.
At the end of the day if little Johnny downloads a crack and uses it to do wallpapers or photochop cars he isnt taking sales from Adobe as he would just get used to using a program he could get hold of. But when he grows up he will be less likely to use Photoshop in a job as his workflow will be tuned to using non PS shortcuts etc.
I know its a controversial view but it is still a valid one.
There is always ways of getting software but I do agree a public forum like this one is not the place to discuss it.

As for the question, go for Paintshop Pro if it is your own money and you are just a casual home user. Otherwise, use a comparison site or see if you can get a student license (normally that includes if you have a kid at school).

In principle, a valid enough argument, but not one that has any legal legs.

Because there's a chance that someone might buy a copy sometime in the future does not give any right to pirate software now.

Making a copy of a CD is compared to stealing a car, and in the FACT trailers is 'used to fund terrorism'. Software piracy is not akin to the theft of a physical item.

Paint.net is also a good, free alternative.

Cant you get a trial version of photoshop?
Another option is to try and get hold of an older copy, you probably dont need the latest version anyway.

I tried the trial version, half the tools I needed were locked!
