Morning all, I put this in General Gassing, but have just discovered that there is an Audi-only section so have cut and paste it here as you folk may be better placed to help me out.

Evening all, lurked around for long enough, so thought I'd sign up and the joining messgae say go to General Gassing and say hello!

Due to lifes new adventures I've had to give up my beloved Z3M coupe and I'm now looking to get an A6 avant for family duties, and wondered what the general view was on what is the best one for me? I'll do about 35,000 miles per year, have about 11-12k to spend and as much as it pains me, due to the company I work for paying for my mileage, for the first time I'll have to now start filling up at the black pump.
Looking on various websites I seem to be in the middle of two models. The new ones in my price range are either mega-miles or a bit low spec, whilst with the older models I can get a good low mileage one loaded with goodies!!

I do like 'loaded' cars when buying second hand - so whats the general view between these two models (sorry, I don't know what the code name are yet)
Is it just a case of newer being better?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

For me an Audi A6 must have leather and a 6 cylinder engine, and because I drive mostly on motorway I've added an auto gear box.

So I bought an 2.5tdi V6 with the CVT gear box. I love the combination. The engine is quite torquy, it's not a sports saloon at nearly 2 tonnes. You are going to read plenty of bad thigs about the cvt and I believe is that people tread it like an normal auto which you shouldn't. The only thing you need to know if the gearbox has 7 clutch.

I average 38mpg, it's confy and huge!

Go for one

Given my experience, I would avoid the CVT as they are troublesome, very nice when they work but very expensive and annoying when they go wrong.

With that mileage, I'd recommend a 1.9 as you should get over 40mpg easily. They are torquey enough but no rocketship.
