Front Wheel Bearing replacement
Discussion
I'm just cleaning up the front hubs and now the disc is off I have a very rumbly bearing on the front.
How difficult are these to change?
Is it easier to do it on the car when it is back together?
I've got one mother of a torque wrench if it needs one.
I've seen references to bearing kits as LH or RH. Whats the difference? Is it the nut that holds it all together? LH or RH Thread?
I could go away and read my haynes manual but I'm sure there's far more wisdom on here.

Hi Chris, yes its the nut behind the spindle cap that is handed... its a LH thread on the RH Hub.
If you can prise the spindle cap off with the wheels still on it looks like you will be able to undo the nut in place, otherwise you need to remove the whole spindle and hold it in a vice to undo the nut. then jack it all up with the wheels off and you should be able to replace the bearings from then OK
good luck and I'm sure this will not be a challenge to someone who has got as far as you have already with the rest of your car...
pictures required for a future "How To..." reference please

Tip: Jack up the car and put the space-saver on. (Lower the car back down as undoing the nut when the car is jacked up will end in tears) The space-saver has a bigger central hole and the socket will fit on the hub nut straight through it.
that works great for the rears but for the front , access to the nut is inboard of the hubs behind a cap...K

Kevin I think its way past the wheels being on!The chassis is at the shotblasters!
Anyway the nut is the same size as the rear one which is handy when you already have a hub nut and bar thats like a pole vaulters pole!
Jeezus it was tight too! I thought I was going to pull the vice off the bench.
Can someone look in a V6 haynes manual to see if it has a torque setting for the front hub nut please.
I have a 4 cylinder manual (as I kept getting outbid on the V6 ones for some reason!) and that torque setting is missing. I don't think VF tight is accurate enough!
Anyway I got it to bits - here's what the problem was - always nice when you find your suspicions are correct.

Kevin I didn't take any photos while I was doing it as I ended up covered in grease - though I could do some when I put it back together if it would help.
Incidentally Sierra wheel bearings are on ebay for a fiver or so.

It's massive - I did't know the exact setting as I got a mate in a garage to tighten it. The bible says 229 to 258 ftlbs.barcychoc said:

I took some photos of the bearing assembly, but also forgot to photograph getting the thing off in the first place. It's really not that difficult - a bit brutal but not difficult, if you see the difference.barcychoc said:

My motor factor quoted £25 a bearing (£50 total plus VAT!) and the ebay ones at £20 the pair inc postage fitted perfectly.Edited by tvrgit on Monday 2nd June 19:26

What manual are you referring to when you quote the V6 Haynes manual
Its the haynes manual for the V6 engined ford sierra.Very useful for engine, transmission, brakes, wheel bearings etc as they are all the same. As I have the V8 the 4 cylinder manual was fine for me as I don't need any ford engine and gearbox info.
