Just had my A4 2.0 Tdi 170 in for its 37000 mile service & whilst it was there the dealers carried out a number of recalls.

One of the 'recalls' was a modification to the engine management system... The service chap was nice & helpfull but only explained this as a remap to smooth off the power delivery.

Anyone know any more details on what this actual remap / mod was?

Seat of the pants feel is that the initial kick I used to get has been toned down & the power now seems to pull further into the red line area. Also my fuel economy might have dropped a bit but its too early days at this stage ( interestingly I have averaged around 36mpg since day 1 )

Aaaaah yes, as with loads of manufacturers there are issues with dual mass flywheels and big slugs of diesely torque.

The new map softens the delivery at low revs and on upshifts (so the torque doesn't headbutt the clutch, as it were). I've not heard it reported that they rev harder but it wouldn't surprise me if they had, the 2,0 TDIs do die-off somewhat at the top of the range.

A bit off topic sorry but might keep thread near the top... has anyone compared the 2.7 V6 TDi and 2.0 TDi 170? They both have similar power figures but I can't imagine the 2.0 would move an A6 like the 2.7 does - even hooked up to an Automatic Quattro estate it went bloody well. 3.0 must be great.
Does one exhaust each side indicate a 170bhp 2.0 A4?

2.0 isn't as flexible, smooth or quiet as the 2.7 in short.

3.0 is a lovely driv ein both A4 and A6 with plenty of oomph on tap, remapped they're good quick little things smile

Quick as they are, the v6 diesels, you have to wonder at the reason for buying one of these with the current cost of diesel.

If they average around 27mpg which I believe is the real world every day consumption, then with the price differential to petrol reducing this by 5mpg to 22mpg means a 4.2 petrol is really the one to go for?

If you are after economy, the 20tdi A6 which I have is good enough to be honest and pulls the big car well enough.

Well there's quick "enough" and there's the V6 TDi which while not much faster does seem to transform the character of the car. It felt like an executive steamer of the old school, whereas with the four-cylinder clatter I don't think you'd have that feel. It would always feel like a nice car with "a diesel engine" in the derogatory sense of the phrase (it probably wouldn't suit auto either, and auto suits the car).
I see your point in the sensibleness stakes though, the 2.0 is hard to fault for all round ability - should win more engine awards instead of all those great but irrelevant big BMW petrols!

Would hope for more than 5MPG difference for identically powered petrol vs diesel versions though - more like 7-8?

having got some more miles under my belt since the map was changed I have decided I prefered it the way it was. When stomping on the throttle, just as the boost come in it now feels like there is a very slight 'pause' , as if the ignition on a petrol car is being retarded, & then the power come in a little bit smoother than before. Previously you'd floor it and as soon as the boost came on .. bang.. the power was there & the traction control light would flash biggrin

Don't think it's any slower just smoother.

Fuel economy does seem to have dropped off slightly too
