Canon 24-105 L lens 'noise'

I use the lens in autofocus mode 100%.

I noticed tonight when i manually turned the focus ring that it sound 'gritty' irregardless of whether the focus switch was in the AF or MF setting.

In AF mode, the lens is quiet in operation with no sign of the 'gritty' noise.

I'd like to think (and hope) that the 'grit' noise is just the AF motor, but i'd welcome comments, especially from other 24-105 lens owners.

not sure but anyone found the AF is a hell of a lot slower than in the 17-40?
