My new Golf GT 170 diesel was delivered today (at last! another story, don’t get me started!)
I've never had a 'new' new car so how should I look after the engine in its first few miles? On my bike I got a nice little sticker on the tank telling me how they recommended run in is performed, I’m not crawling under the golf to see if they did the same…

yup, will drink a fair bit of oil for the first couple of thousand - remember it is the VW long life oil you use from experience in here.

a good thrashing surely.....that way the drivetrain gets used to the standards you expect throughout its life.

I took it easy up to 1000 miles (under 3000 revs) but my director thrashing it the first day I got it when he asked to 'borrow the keys to have a look' didn't seem to do any long term harm rolleyes

Surely the books with the car tell you - I asked the dealership re my Golf GTi and they stated the engines are bench run in and checked but to take it easy for the first 600 miles so everything else has a chance to bed in; suspension, gearbox, steering, etc.

The dealers instructions were much as the manual ... which is what I did.

That said, our cars at work are run in to varying standards from nothing to completely by the book .... and it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference to the way they run or how often they go wrong !
