Hey guys

I won't lie, I don't know a great deal about cars, just the essentials like changing a tyre and fluids. But I want to learn, one of the reasons I am considering the mk2.

I'll be going to see a 91 Mk2 Golf GTI 16 at the weekend and I am looking for opinions on the car, it's this one here http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Golf/GT...

What do you guys think of the car?

In laymans terms what should I look out for when checking out the car?

What sort of work will I typically need to do on a mk2 gti of this age and mileage of 111,000?

How much do you think it'll cost me to keep it on the road?

Realistically how long should I expect to get out of the engine?

How safe is the car by todays standards?

Am I foolish to even consider this?

Thanks for any replies

As lovely as it looks, it's up at a premium price.

Have a look through the last few MK2 Golf threads on here, detailed responses on all of your questions should pop up.

Sorry I should have added I'd be getting it €4,500. Do you think that makes a difference in whether its worth it or not?

Still top money at 4500euro, are cars generally more expensive in Eire?

There's plenty of information on clubgti and edition38 websites.

Condition is more important on these cars than mileage. Check that its been looked after well with regular servicing, check receipts and service stamps. If its been looked after the engines will be good for 200k. Check for smoke out of the exhaust under load. Not so bad on start up as long as it clears after a blip on the throttle.

Check for play in steering and any knocking from the suspension.

Rust can be a problem so check around bottom of windsreen, wiper blanks, bottom of doors and inside fuel filler cap.

Alloys should be in good nick but only £40 per wheel to sort.

Standard cars are more desirable but sensible mods won't harm the value.

Also check insurance, get a quote before you look.

We have to pay an import tax on all cars called VRT.

So if I buy a golf in the UK for £1500 which is about €1900. When I bring it back to Ireland I'll have to register the car and pay VRT to the government which would be anywhere from €1100 - 1600 on a mk2 16v gti, depending on spec, miles and engine.

This will give you an approximate idea of how much VRT is for various cars https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showCarCalcul...

So if I import from the UK I have to factor in the cost of flight to the UK, taxis, trains etc, food, petrol and the cost of ferry back to Ireland, on average this will add at least €500.

So the car I have bought for €1900 in the UK will have cost me at least €3500 to bring back to Ireland. So a lot of people sell UK imports in Ireland and add on an extra €1000 just for the hassle of importing one.
