The engine on my TVR-V8S is sounding a bit tappety at about 2000 rpm, although not at idle. Is this normal???????????????????????? I know some of the later TVR engines (4.3L onwards on Griff etc) have hydrolic lifters, which means that they need replacing. How difficult / expensive are these to replace if I do them my self.

But, as my car is a bit earlier does my car have solid lifters. If so how difficult is setting the gaps.

Many thanks,

Z.

Your engine will have hydraulic lifters as standard. The tapping noises could be one of any number of bearings, or a worn cam - best have an expert listen to it.

Oh b~gger, if it's bearings then that could be a bit more work. I will have some one check it out. It does sound exactly the same as my Dads Griff did when it needed lifters though.

Thanks,

Z

What oil are you using and have you been changing it regularly? At anything over 40,000 miles be prepared for a new camshaft, followers etc etc

Re-built my pre-cat V8S engine last year at 48,000 approx. Tappetty at all revs - worse at idle when hot. Cam was badly worn, one lobe especially (#3 I recall). New cam (£150 approx), 16 lifters (£220 approx) plus all associated gaskets and the pleasure of re-shimming! Even after all that its still not as quiet as I would like - I think one or two of the rockers are worn!! I'll live with it for the time being - no adverse effect on performance and the s/s exhaust is all I can hear when I'm driving anyway!

57,000 miles and always serviced on time, mobil 1 oil. Maybe it's some thing to get checked out after I have finished my chassis. Did you get the cam reground, or just buy a new one.

Mobil 1 may be the issue (hear we go again with the never ending oil debate).

A new camshaft is the way to go

I had a similar worry on my V8S last year, thinking it was valve related. The car was fine at tickover but on acceleration with engine under load (pulling from 30mph in 5th gear) there was a pronounced clicking/ticking, rising with engine speed. After much head scratching and advice from various engine experts it turned out to be a split manifold. One of the four pipes was split on the inside where they run together to form the 88 shape. The manifold could be tested/checked out for leaks before going down the valves route.

sorry z for the delay in response, brand new cam and I use Castrol GTX. The oil debate is never ending although I think the view of many is that Mobil 1 is too thin for this engine.

I will probably change my oil at the next service then. There seems no point in paying for expensive oil if it is too thin. Any here use slick 50, or the like.

Suggest you do a search for 'snake oil' before spending hard-earned on that stuff!
