R-Factor - idiots guide.....

......me being the idiot in question. Had a browse on rfactorcentral.com and it looks right up my street. Played LFS in the past and absolutely loved it to death, but my knowledge of computer stuff is limited to posting on here and looking at porn. Whats the crack with R-factor? I'm awful with configuring, downloading, setting up, basically anything that would sound alien to an 80yr old (Although I'm only 24...). I've got a wheel and pedals somewhere, I think its a decent one because I remember it was recommended by some LFS people, it cost loads and has some 'force-feedback' type magic in it. How hard would it be for a complete technophope like me to download R-factor, and then play it? Anyone who is nice enough to reply, imagine you are explaining it to someone from outer space, or something. Cheers!!

£17.99 seems a bargain as I paid £30
A wheel is essential if you want to get the best out of it. With regard to the cars/tracks on rFactor Central, it's not overly complicated. Most come with an installer, like you get with any piece of software on a CD/DVD. Others just need extracing using 7-Zip. Not much else to it really.
You won't regret it, and once you've got the hang of things, come and race with us in our league!

You can download the game for free and use it for so many hours as a trial.
But its quite a hefty download.
Its not hard to install new mods, most you just point winzip at your rfactor folder and press extract and the new mod/cars are added.
It can be a bit confusing with different versions of mods, but if your racing in the league FWD our resident expert will help us to get it right
R1 is running rfactor on a very basic spec laptop and he manages ok 90% of the time. If you have a propper PC then you can always get a better graphics card if your PC is slow.. even a budget gaming card is ok for Rfactor at medium settings.
But its quite a hefty download.

You wont be competitive without a wheel. As rFactor is quite realistic you need to be smooth on the throttle and steering or you will spin.. keyboard is very difficult to use.I also play on a laptop but I just plug in a USB wheel.

If you want to know what spec your Pc is....
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information
In here you get a load of differnet tabs...
First off Memory, in the top tab "System Summary" look down the list you should see (Available Physical Memory ........ MB)
I run on 512mb no probs, 256 might be pushing it.
Next Graphics, ideally you need a dedicated graphics card, so one that isnt stuck to you motherboard, it has its own slot.
Back to System Information, Components +, Display, name at the top should be what graphics card you have.
Try and post that lot on here if you can, might save you downloading the demo.
Failing this, if you brought the pc ready built and its a known brand, dell, hp etc, on the back should be a sticker with a model/product number, and ill see if i can find your spec.
The thing to remember is that the game you buy isnt really worth the money, but the endless mods, cars, tracks etc is. To get the most you will need to download quite a few things. As far as installing the game, if your pc will run it, you buy the game online, you pay online and they send you a confimation email. In that email is your activation code. When you download the demo, it give you the option to trial for 1 hour, or buy the game. Once your hour is up you won't be able to reset it. But after the trail it has a box, Already brought the game?, click that, enter the activation from your email, and your playing. No disk etc. But keep that email safe, and i kept the install file, that i downloaded, just so i dont have to keep downloading it.
