Setting Up My PS3

Hi all,

Just purchased a PS3 and was just wondering what is the best way to set it up to my 1080p TV via ny HDMI enabled AV receiver. Do i opt to send both audio and video channels via my HDMI cables, or is it better to send audio seperately via the optical out. If i choose either of these options, are there any PS3 menu options i need to choose/enable to ensure optimal video and audio quality?

I don't think there's any difference really. FWIW, my audio & visuals go through a single HDMI cable.

The PS3 will auto configure to the optimal settings.

Sending it via HDMI will be easier, that's what I'd do. It's digital, so I can't see there being a huge difference either way.

Agreed - HDMI. Unless you're a audiophile, you're not going to tell the difference.

HDMI is the way to go, as long as you receiver can accept HDMI audio (some just pass the video signal through).

HDMI has much more bandwidth than the digital optical interface, and is the only way to access the HD sound formats (Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio) on Bluray disks.

It's also the only way to get 5.1 sound from SACD's if you have a 60GB PS3.

thanks all. very helpful. I think I chose the wrong option earlier, when, after connecting my ps3 via hdmi for the first time, I chose 'no' when it asked me if I wanted to send both audio and video via my hdmi cable, as I thought doing audio via optical was the best bet. Is this a problem, and if so how can I reverse this choice if I want to send both A and V via hdmi? I have explored the menus but cannot seem to find the option.

Go to 'Sound Settings' > 'Audio Output Settings'. You should get a list of outputs something like HDMI, Digital Out, AV/SCART.

Dear All,

alas it is not all sorted. Just like a similiar thread running RE xBox 360 sound set up, my PS3 refuses to send out audio in Dolby Digital.

I have the PS3 connected direct to the TV direct using HDMI for video only, and i have an optical connection to my AV receiver for audio. I have the PS3 Audio, Vedeo & optical out settings correct (i think) but for some reason whenever i play bluray disc or DVD, the sound output is not Dolby Digital (my AV should automatically change to this input mode when it detects it) so i have to use Pro Logic. Sometimes Dolby D appears for a while at start up of a disc, but then disappears for the main feature. Any ideas?

there should be a linear PCM/ Bitstream option in the settings for what to send the AV amp. Basically in Linear PCM mode the PS3 decodes the Dolby Digital signal and sends out the full PCM (uncompressed) signal to the AV amp. In Bitstream mode it sends what is read off the disc (still compressed with DD) and the AV Amp does the decoding.

Sounds like you have Linear PCM set, and because the optical interface doesn't have the bandwidth to send 6 channels (5.1) of uncompressed PCM audio it only sends stereo, which your amp is then running with Pro Logic.

If you change this setting to bitstream it should send the 5.1 DD signal to you amp.

However can I ask what Amp you have and why you are not using HDMI? If you use HDMI will (amp permitting) be able to get Dolby True HD, DTS Master Audio and Full PCM soundtracks from Blurays. These HD codecs are not compatible with the optical link so you will be limited to the stadard DD or DTS Core soundtracks.

Thanks Mr Yogi. very helpful indeed. I will check those settings as I think you might be right. I have an Onkyo 505 AV receiver, and I am not sure it supports those audio modes you mention, but I will check. Either way, I will ensure my PS3 audio out is set to bitstream, and i'll see how I get on

AV receivers haven't got to support the HD codecs as they can be decoded by the bluray player (or PS3) and then sent to the receiver over HDMI as an uncompressed as PCM signal. However what the receiver must accept is 6 channel Linear PCM over the HDMI port and unfortunately your's does not.

So connections wise you are setup right, either way DD and especially DTS sounds great anyway

All sorted now mate many thanks. The 'optical out' was already set as bitstream, but the HDMI out was set as Linear PCM. So, i changed this setting to bitstream and somehow it did the trick, and lo and behold, DVDs and Blue ray now output DD!
