PS3 / Wii / XBox?

Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum, but I need some help. It's time to replace the old PS2 with something newer and well, just better. But I dont know which one to go for. The PS3 looks to be the favourite, it's a step on from what I'm used to, but looks pretty much the same thing. Is there anything that an Xbox would give me over and above that? And why do I need a HDD in one?
I'm not one for these long drawn out strategy games, if I cant drive it, shoot it or otherwise do something interesting within 5 minutes then it'll get binned.
Online/networking would be an added bonus, but not essential. Good games for me are things like TOCA 3 etc, I like being able to drive the tracks, especially UK ones.
The Wii looks like fun, but more of a short term come back from the pub and fancy messing around with some ten pin bowling
I'm not interested in anything handheld really, or something retro and now cool again

Not sure TOCA is available for PS3, if you're not familiar with the Gran Turismo series then check it out.

You cant compare the Wii with the PS3, both units designed for a different reason. The PS3 is an all out games machine designed for high graphic output with fast demanding games, the Wii is a bit of fun with friends and family where you interact more with the games with more realistic gameplay actions, its not about speed and graphics.

Exactly. Add a logitech Driving force pro wheel and pedals and GT5 is scarily real. No brainer, unless your favourite game only works on another platform.- Gran Turismo Prologue

Also the PS3 looks neat, so her indoors doesn't complain
If you want to play games (i.e have a LARGE library to choose from, and reportedly better versions of the same game, GTA being a recent example) go for the 360. for the occaisonal game player and blu-ray watching the PS3 is the way to go, the blu-ray player in there is VERY good compared to equivalently priced stand-alone players.
PS3 will get better over time as far as games support goes, but from its release and for the medium term the 360 will likely have the best games and there arent that many single platform releases around for the ps3 as the developers know they cant make a console exclusive and hope to make big bucks as they have done in the past.
I think Gran Turismo is the only big name platform exclusive for the PS3 still on the cards, and that has been delayed by 2-3 years so far. The version out now is essentially just a demo.
By the time the PS3 catches up (and Im sure it will, as it is a great bit of kit) we'll all be anticipating the PS4 and xbox 720!
ETA if its for the Kids Wii is best, cheap games, lots of multiplayer/party stuff.

Excellent bit of kit.
The HDD is for some partial installs, such as GT5 for example. It can also contain stacks of MP3's, pictures etc if you intend to use it as a home-hub kind of thing.
PS3 for now, and think about a Wii closer to Christmas (you'll just about be getting bored with CoD4 and GTA by then)
Personally I'd steer clear of the XBox, not a bad system at all, but simply shocking reliability. (and of course no Blu-Ray player)

In reality it's full of shallow games and the Wii-remote's "motion sensing" is regulated to the roll of a glorified button (with the exception of the pointer functionality).I bought a Wii not long after launch, sold it after a month due to boredom. To me the PS3 list looks a lot more interesting, it's more varied and has less sequels. The 360's one will likely have the better games though, there's some really stunning stuff on that list (Alan Wake especially). A good half of that 360 list will also appear on PC, if not immediately then at some point (like the Halo games, it's usually a few years before they're ported).

It's a tricky one. I have both and I use the 360 the most, mainly because the online side of it is so good. There are more games available as well, not so much an issue for me as I tend to buy one or two games and play them to death.
The PS3 is the better system in terms of hardware, slicker, better made and better featured, and in the end I think it's going to be the top dog once it matures.
The 360 is poorly made and noisy but has XB Live which is superb. It also has it's fair share of driving games, if that's your thing.
I'd forget about the Wii, you will get bored fairly quickly.
