I've been thinking in restarting an interest in photography which I had at school.
Things have moved on a bit it seems, but after a bit of research I'm thinking of getting a Canon G9 with a copy of Aperture to process my images.
This will be used for hobby, car and landscape shots etc.
Does anyone have this camera and can advise pro's and cons, plus any extra kit I should get?

I have one for taking around with me when it's not possible, or practical, to carry the 1Ds with me.
A fantastic little camera, but; ISO 200+ is very noisy, it's relatively slow to capture the shot once the shutter button is pressed, the lens doesn't offer extreme wide angle (without adapters).
I'm possibly being a little harsh, as I'm comparing it to a £6k camera, but I'm not sure I'd want it as my only camera.

I've got one as a backup for the 5D
It's a fairly large camera for a compact, but has a lot of the features present on a DSLR.
I use mine for carrying about day to day and when out and about on the bike.
The image quality is quite good, but does get noisier when the ISO goes up, far more noticably than the SLR. I also find the funtions a bit harder to access than those on the SLR, which can be a bit of a pain, but that is to be expected.

I've got one and I think it's great. I wanted a camera small enough to actually take with me so that I'd use it. It's certainly not as good as a proper SLR, but for the size I think it's excellent. It's major weakness is noise above ISO200, but that's been mentioned already. It doesn't mean you can't get good night shots though. I have a mini tripod from Sony that lets me do long exposure shots on the go.
Most of the shots I've posted in this forum are off it so have a look through my posting history for some examples if you like. I've posted 3 or 4 in the last day or so I think.

I picked one up before my trip to NZ. Last time bought a D50 but sold it not long after the trip as an SLR was just too cumbersome to take around with me.
Been very impressed with it - still going through the photos of the trip but there's some excellent ones so far, clear, low noise. Image stabilized lens has been great too. Having the manual control was great for waterfalls and the like.
An SLR just doesn't work for me - the G9 is small enough for a jacket pocket or I just sling it over my shoulder on the neck strap. Bought a case, but rarely used it as it feels plenty solid enough. The other big point for me is that I can get the Canon underwater case for ~£150 and take it diving - SLR housings are silly money.
