I didn't even know you could go below f/1?
(damn, won't let me hotlink)

Is there a theoretical maximum f?
Not really, although as you can imagine for the same size target film (eg 35mm) and the same focal length it gets MUCH harder to build. There's a F/0.7 that I think NASA made and I think was used in a film?
That f/0.95 is a great lens but won't fit on any of todays SLR's and is actually more like f/1.05 due to transmission losses. The later lenses had better coatings and the tranmission losses were much smaller.
apparently about 0.5...

Edit to add I've got a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 and I did try it at max aperture once... the results weren't great. Anything below F2 on it gives such a narrow depth of field that it's effectively unusable. It's a cracking lens for informal portraits though.

That'll be Kubricks Barry Lyndon - he used an adapted ex NASA ziess F0.7 lens for the interior shots. Bought it on dvd purely for these scenes, but being a Kubrick film, I haven't free'd up 3 hrs to watch it yet![quote]That f/0.95 is a great lens but won't fit on any of todays SLR's and is actually more like f/1.05 due to transmission losses. It never pays to read technical things before the first cup of coffee. I read the above as saying you got that ex-NASA Zeiss f0.7 lens on eBay purely for those scenes...And no, I haven't heard what happened with TPBG but I suspect we will now
