Should a crankshaft pulley shatter???!!!
Discussion
A collegue at work has just taken his 2.5 v6 Vauxhall vectra into the local Vauxhall garage when it broke down. He has been told that the crankshaft pulley has shattered and that the first thing the techies want to do is strip the two heads off at a cost of £300 and see if there is any damage up top.
Bearing in mind this car has done 65,000 miles and has a FSH from Vauxhall, shouldn't vauxhall be doing a bit more than this???
Personally I think this is a major quality issue and that Vauxhall should be footing all if not part of the bill.
Has anyone any experience of Vauxhall and or this type of failure? Are there any recalls on crankshaft pulleys?
Cheers,
Steve.

The post is about the pulley, right? Maybe it's got a rubber bonded inner to outer ring. For damping purposes. If so that could have perished prematurely which would make it a warranty issue perhaps. I'd talk to the AA if you're a member or your friend is and I'd certainly want a look at the damaged pulley. I wouldn't strip the top end at my expense.
I've heard of the plastic Camshaft belt pulley guides shattering on the V6 before , hence always change them when doing the cam belt. But I've not heard of the crank pulley going, must look into this.
Alternators last about 120K btw and are £250 parts alone .
Other than that I've assumed the lump to be pretty bomb proof.
