first 360 red ringed, second one didnt red ring but the disc drive may take 50 attempts (no joke) to load a disc.these were both placed on a wooden floor with plenty of air space
now i have an elite, however i,m worried that because i have it in a tight space in a tv rack (about 10mm above in a horizontal position and about 6" behind) its going to die too,my mate reckons it will be fine.
easy option is to have it on the side but it spoils the 'clean' look of the room.
will it die or should i have it on display?

I bought an Elite when they first came out (Sept/Oct?) and it died on me last month. I don't play it alot, maybe 5 hours a week. It's right next to an external vent and stands alone on the TV shelf thingy.

I really don't think it matters, just assume it's going to die at some point and rely on Microsofts 3 year warranty to get you a new one.

Ooh, let me think, perhaps its because he likes the games and has invested a fair amount of wedge in them?
Or maybe, like me, he hates Sony with a passion, and they'd have to produce 3D holographics with real time Angelina Jolie recreation before I'll buy anything from the Evil Ones.

Early elites were made the same way as early 360's

new ones (all types) are 'fixed'.

Doesnt mean they wont RROD - because thats a 'general hardware' error, could mean anything, but the main cause should be fixed now.

As for the Elite, same as the others except a larger HDD and its black.

Depends. I dont drive a Nissan or ride a nice Honda, because they bore me. So no, your analogy doesnt play. tongue out

With Sony, I intensely dislike the way a) they control media from production to distribution, and leverage that for silliness like MemoryStick (simply to annoy Panasonic et al) and b) the fluctuations in quality depending on current market perception (lets not talk about late 90s early 2000s TVs eh?)

Aside from that, its all about the content for me, and MS seems to have the better stuff. Not interested in BluRay -I download all my HD stuff, cheers.

Have a look at the label on your powerpack, if it says 175w you're in luck and have the new chipset which runs cooler. If it says 230w you still have the old hardware.

This applies to the white 360s as well, the Elite is no different apart from the colour and HDD.

Means you need to get it up to 88 mph. Don't forget to pack your plutonium or lightning conductor for the journey home.

Unless of course it's fitted with a Mr. Fusion. Then you're laughing.

I think it's all a matter of luck. I have one of the very first Japanese consoles, run it off a step-down transformer regularly and have never had a problem. Once in a while it has trouble reading discs, but since I have switched to high-quality DVDRs I have not had a problem (the Xbox reads good burns much better with far less scrubbing around in the disc tray and loads games much faster on my DVDRs than with originals of the same game, ironically).
