I have just received my Compact Flash to PCMCIA adapter from a well known online retailer of things photographic.
Won't work....

Am I being stupid or are these things well known to not work ?

I've a Sandisk Extreme III 4Gb CF card, and a non-name 'made in Taiwan' type adapter from 7day shop.

They seem to fit physically perfectly well together and slot straight into the PCMCIA slot very well, but it doesn't seem to recognise a new device when I do so.

Any clues gentlemen ?
Chris

Some PCMCIA readers used to have limits of 1Gb or something stupid as that. Have you got another lower sized card you could try ?

Does your PCMCIA slot work with other things?

Don't have a smaller capacity CF card, nor anything else to try the PCMCIA slot with.

I'll see if I can try the thing out on another laptop.

Failing that it's a USB 2.0-tastic

Maybe take it back to the shop and see if they can fire it up for you?

I have a Lexar 64-bit PCMCIA/CF card and it works well, but was tricky to set up and I had to call in my Head of Gadgets chris.mapey to help me! It's almost as fast USB2. If yours isn't 64-bit it'll be dog-slow.

Nearly as fast as USB 2.0 - ?? Damn, I thought it was much much faster.

I'll stick to USB and not bother in that case....

Well TBF that's what it achieves on my laptop, which is a Core 2 Duo with 2Gb RAM running XP. Maybe there's some other limiting factor I don't know about and yours will befaster, but I find it perfectly OK.

My PCMCIA card reader is pants speed wise compared to USB2. I have a feeling that may be my PCMCIA controller struggling rathe rthan the reader itself though.

Is it a PCMCIA or a CardBus adapter? Look the same, fit each other, but different. I just sold a Lexar CardBus adapter on ebay, and the buyer then complained it didn't work at all, but all he in fact needed was new drivers installing.
