20D to 40D

Thinking of selling my 20D and upgrading to a 40D, and was wondering if anyone had done the same and if they felt it was worth it. One of my main reasons is because I want a better lens than the 18-55 kit lens I have at the moment, so by the time i've brought a 40D + 17-85 IS USM kit, claimed the Canon cashback and sold my 20D, I reckon it will have cost me around £450. The other option is to get a Canon EF 17-40mm L lens for £500 and keep my 20D. Not sure what will be the best way to go!

I've just upgraded from a 350D to a 40D which is clearly going to be a more obvious improvement than from a 20D. However a friend of mine has just gone from 20D to 30D and he reckons the difference is noticable. Personally, I would buy the lens first, though. The 20D is still a great body.
