I'll be taking my asus eee to lemans so I can post pictures back home and edit a blog thing. I will shoot everything in RAW on a 350d.

So I need a way to get the pictures from raw to jpg with a little bit of fixing (as I'm rubbish smile)

I have lightroom and I am pretty happy with it, so I could bung that on there, however I'm abit worried about speed and wondered if there was a simple alternative.....

All thoughts appreciated.

ACDSee is a pretty good bit of software, has RAW processing, batch processing. basic image editing plus lots of other features and will probably run faster than Lightroom.

When on hols or otherwise away from home I tend to shoot in RAW+JPEG, so I can fiddle the jpegs quickly and easily on the laptop, then process the RAW files a bit more carefully when at home.

The reason being my laptop isn't really up to manipulating large RAW files, and it has a fair bit more processing power than an EEE...

Now that is a very good idea (and not something I had even considered)...
So a lightweight .jpg processing tool then....what do people recommend?

David, asume yo mean Eee PC? If you do I'd be interested to hear your comments on it. At the moment I've got a Epson P2000 that I use to back up my photos on while away, but it's a bit slow and it only does one thing - view photos (actually can't even fdo that now I shoot at 12Mp). I'm off travelling around Canada soon and thought the idea of a laptop much better so I can email, bit of surfing for hotels etc, but mine is pretty bulky and I really want to travel as light as possible. So in the airport the other day was looking at one, to me seems just the right size, light etc. So what's it like to use, whats it like to look at photos on. I assume you just wang on a USB hardrive and copy photos onto there. What's it like copying them, and hows the battery life?

Thats the idea, although as lemans is only 5 days I'll take a 16gb stick, I'll have a go and let you know.

For jpeg stuff on my lappo I use paint.net because it's the right price. Free!

Surprisingly good but not without some significant limitations such as only having the ability to rotate in increments of 90 degrees, and no option to feather a selection.

Good for quick and dirty edits though.

Well neither acdsee nor lightroom would work correctly which is a pain as they both seemed to perform until it came to saving files which neither would do reliably.

I'll tweak the memory a little later and give it another go but I don't hold out much hope.

So, did someone mention that picasa could handle RAW?

as per original reply, have you tried digital photo professional v3.0? It is free if you own the 350d and came on your cd's but will need an upgrade. It is quite possibly the best RAW editor there is or it is certainly up there with the best. Does everything you want too, give it a try - just because it comes shipped does not make it st

Alas the screen res is not high enough to run it, looks like I might go with picasa for the event so I can get stuff online quickly then post process properly when I get back.

yes

Picasa handles most RAW files, though it doesn't like D300 ones frown

I do like the abiity to add buttons to Picasa (one click to Picasa web albums or Flickr is great.
