Just recently been introduced to the wonders of Glentress etc, and really want to get a starter bike. Don't want to dive in at the deep end - just a good basic hardtail that can be upgraded as required. To those with a bit more experience than me, is this 07 Specialized Rockhopper a good deal - seems to have a good spec for the dosh and generally seems to get good reviews? Any other recommendations around the £500 mark?

Only if you are one of the cast from Time Bandits. The only size available is tiny.

ha ha - just read that quickly at thought it said 13 in stock! Yeah - maybe a bit on the bit small side. In general is the Specialized Rockhopper recommended then? Or something else...

Comes highly recommended normally, along with the cheaper hardrock.

I always think of them as the Golf GTi of bikes. Good, but everyone seems to have one....

I ended up with a Trek 6500 Disc 2008, £600 reduced from £700.

Ended up buying a Rockhopper Disc 08 from a local store. Managed to get a 10% discount so pretty good value at £540. I know there is are a lot of them about but I guess that is a recommendation in itself...

Really liked the feel of it when I tested it, and the components are pretty much as good as you get for the money as far as I could see from my shopping around.

My first proper mountain bike - looking forward to the weekend!!
