recently got fed up with trying to get decent shots at brands hatch with my sony compact camera so invested in a canon 10d at the weekend. It came with a 28-80 lens but this doesn't seam to zoom enough to get decent shots at brands.

I'm think i'd be better off with a 75-300, am i thinking along the right lines? If so can a reasonable lens be found for around £100 (second hand is not a problem) seam to be a few on ebay but which are best left alone and which are Ok.

As this is a new hobby i don't really want to spend a great deal more cash until i know i enjoy it.

Hi Andy,

I'm new to Motorsport photography myself but you will probably need to look for Canon lenses with USM and Sigma lenses with HSM - these are the faster focusing lenses, which you will need for Motorsport. As for lenses and prices I've not really looked at older lenses so I don't know what prices will be. you are looking in the right range - up to 300mm should be fine. I've never done Brands but most of my shots around Silvo all fall under 300mm. I don't think the 75-300mm lens you mentioned has USM, but that's not to say it won't be any good. I'm considering its replacement, the new 70-300 IS, but that's around £300.

Wait for guys like Piers_k, Goldeeno, Simpo, Rob D and autofocus to reply. They (and many others) will be able to advise heaps more than me.

if you look in argos you'll see a 90-300mm lense for about £140, i've got one of these for my canon 300D, great zoom on it but if you want crystal clear pin sharp shots then you'll be needing to spend more money..LOADS more money.

don't get me wrong, for general snap snots or even motoring shots it's a great lense if a little soft on the focus but if you're doing stock you'll get them all rejected.

I can't really add much, i just took a leap and went for the Canon 100-400 L, figured it was the best lens to fit in with the others i have. With the cheaper lens, yes you dont get Ultra Sonic Motors, but to be honest its sometimes more fun to focus manually. As fo Image Stability, i turn it off epsecially for panning, the canon lenses have a setting for horizontal and vertical shake, personally if your worried about shake get a mono pod or tripod. Or crank the shutter up for head on shots, for panning and shake is hidden better.

Ive got a 55-200mm USM, thats what i first started out with going to silverstone etc, and with some cropping still came out with good shots. Sure the quality isnt there, build or photo, but for £150, instead of £700+, big difference.

Sigma 135-400mm, cracking little lens about £400 i think, try that if your budget can bend a bit. I have justified spending alot on a len becuase so far ive not put it down and use it alot. So Just think how muhc you need to spend and how much you'll use it.

Hope this waffle helps.

Cheers for the repies, I understand to get the best results i'd need to spend a fair bit more than I have budgeted, trouble is most of my free cash goes on trying to stay the other side of the fence and preping my 205 has to come first.

I might have a look at the agros one and have another look at ebay and see how i get on.

For £100 quid.. maybe a little more.. you'll be able to pick up the Canon 75-300 III USM..

It was my first 'long' lens and for the money I was happy with it.. but I found as I got more into motorsport photography I ended up missing more shots than I was happy with.

Others will.. Im sure.. say go for the Sigma smile

Taken with the canon..
