I have decided to upgrade some of my kit and therefore have some old bits to sell, the question is where and how?

Obviously ebay is easy and convenient but there are a lot of scammers on there thess days.

Anyone had much success selling camera bits on here for example - and if so how do you value them?

I did ask about a px going from a 400D to a 40D and was offered £140 which seemed a bit low compared to ebay type prices?

I bought a lens from one of the guys on here, served me well for 18 months so far.

Alternatively, there's a couple of photography fora which seem pretty active and which have 'for sale' boards...might be worth a try!

I've sold a couple of cameras on ebay (have a couple of lenses on at the mo). I tend to find selling a kit works really well - throwing in memory cards, std lens, strap etc. really help if you can. Also make sure the auction ends when most the people will be online.

Pricing wise, search for a couple of similar items to yours, add to to your watch list and see what they go for. Add decent photos (though ebays charges an arm and a leg. Describe well (usual stuff...). With cameras make sure to get the postage charges right - weigh the kit, check out the price on royalmail.com. Make sure you check what is insured when you send it - the cheaper postage methods don't cover glass. If in doubt ask at the post office.

I sold my 300D with worn out shutter ( which I made very clear in the listing) for £310 18mths ago. Mainly 'cos that was with 4 batteries, two chargers, couple of memory cards and std lens. Technically the cost of a replacement shutter made it a write off.

AVForums has quite an active photography classifieds although it can be a bit hit and miss. No interest at all in the D50 kit I'm flogging, but stuff like lenses do seem to generate a good response.

I must admit though, eBay does seem to give the best prices.

We've bought a few L series lenses second hand (and a D40 body from our own Mr Hetherington), and have equally sold on our basic kit. Mostly from/to people we already knew though.

I wouldn't knock it, but I don't know if it's the sort of thing I'd buy from ebay.

I know what you mean, esp. with expensive stuff - you've no idea if someone's flogging-on something with a pending (or existing) problem, and with lenses how do you prove it?!?

I sold my 70-200 F2.8 in the classifieds here recently smile it sold within 48hrs of posting.

Alternatively dedicated photo forums such as Ephotozine have very good classified sections.

for i while i bought and sold used camera gear on ebay.

NEVER had a problem with anything i bought.

stuff allways fetched the right money. esp dslr gear...lenses etc. check completed listings to get an idea of value (you will be amazed) and allways start at 99p...it WILL get there in the end and encourages more bidders to get involved ;-)

the key is to sell items individually rather than in 'lots',photograph the items well and describe them properly :-)

oh and as stated before..make sure auction ends in primetime!

good luck,

rick.

It was actually a 20D...paperbag

As RG says, we've bought kit secondhand. All have come from reputable sources* (dealers or friends) and we've not had a problem.

Would I part with large sums of money on eBay for L series glass / camera body? Nope - too risky.

  • - please note, I am not stating that Hetherington is "reputable" in any shape or form. hehe

In my defence, I wrote that mail after Greg E240 left ours on saturday night. The surprising thing here is not that I made a mistake, but that you can make head or tail of what I was saying at all!

The 40D has arrived smile so it is time to sell the old kit - the question is what is a fair price?

It is the Canon 400D kit with the 17-85 IS lens and the battery grip, I will include an extra battery (non Canon but recommended by Warehouseexpress.com), a Canon lens hood and a hoya filter plus a 2Gb CF card. It is boxed (although it has a small hole for the Canon cashback with all books, charger, etc) and is in very good condition.

New on Warehouseexpress.com (I know they are not always the cheapest) it is £759 (without the CF card, filter or hood), thoughts anyone?

See what the second-hand dealers will give you for it. Then have a look at what second hand stuff is fetching on ebay. Then decide if it's worth the effort.

Then get in touch with Don1, who is looking to set himself up on another thread, and agree a deal which is fair to you both thumbup

£50 and ill take it all off your hands?!?!

I dont know, if thats what the price is new, if its in half decent condiditon, maybe £150 off? How much do you think its worth, does the sensor need cleaning? Other than that and surface scraches, should sell for a decent price.

Seen a 400D B/O going for £269 at a dealer, if that helps.

Battery Grip should fetch close to purchase price on eBay.

Rude girl, you are lovely!

As I have been price finding on other sites, an entry level Canon does seem ideal. Jessops in their sale do have new 400D's, with the 4GB card, and a 70-300mm lens (rrp£200) for £500.

Drop me a mail... even if I end up buying the 70-300 with the money saved, it seems like a good idea. let's take it offline?
