A mate passed on this link to a Chimaera on Ebay.. Advertised as a 2001 but it looks like a '93 ish to me..

Did any old spec cars get registered years later or is there something a bit irregular with this one?

Just a bit of a summer 'Miss Marple' for you.. biggrin

It's almost four years since i sold my Chimaera, but back then i remember a car in a similar colour that had been brought back to the uk from Japan i think.

That actual car was about a 95 build but registered similar to this one, also think there was a thread on here somewhere at the time.

Anyone else remember or can confirm this.

I've asked, as car is definately a 95-96 model, will see what they say. Anyone with any knowledge will know the car has wrong door button, wrong engine, wrong dash type, wrong front, rear, bonnet, boot, to name just a few small features......

I agree 96c but what's wrong with it or do you just not like this version.

PS Odd that it appears to have aircon and not listed.

Personally im just intrigued as it has atleast 5 years of mystery in its past..
and to be fair shouldnt any prospective bidder know its full history as anyone who isnt up on their TVR's would be thinking they were buying a car built in '01... but saying that i guess its down to the buyer to do their research and as Claire has shown its not too hard to find out the year the car was built..

interesting tho.... smile

Th grill is like the jap cars and I notice there are no pics of the rear which, if it is japanese, would have had a different shape recess for the jap-style number plate - i.e. more square.

I actually prefer the original shape to the facelift. Guy knows it was made in 96 but doesn't say so on the advert, he claims first registration in 2001, and first service in 2001. With the speedo change aswell and no prior history, my concern would be someone buying it and not being aware.

The seller is a TVRCC member. There's a thread running on the TVRCC general forum. Why not pm him and ask any questions.

well personally speaking i think the fact it was made in 96 should really be on the Ebay item as bidders may not have the benefit of Pistonheads/TVR knowledge or access to the TVRCC forum..

Jo Public will assume they are bidding on a 7 year old car, not a 12 year old car.

Anyway 'll have to find out where this car spent its early years... smile

I too was intrigued by this ad and emailed the seller for an explanation. He said that according to HPI it was built in 1996 and first registered in 2001. He did not know why.

He has posted on TVRCC (just once, to announce that his car was on flea-bay) but not followed up on any comments.

5 years is just too long to be sitting at a dealership. I don't buy that. Imported from Japan? more feasible and the fact that is has a/c supports this scenario.

It's a bit sneaky not mentioning that it's actually a 96 car and for that reason, I'M OUT!

I've seen the car before at a East Mids TVRCC meet and I think the rear numberplate area is the standard shape but is slanted like the later cars, i.e. not back lit.wink

Good evening all

I met a chap at the weekend who told me about this thread.

I’m the guy that was (and still is) trying to sell this car.

On another Pistonheads thread someone suggested that the car was Japanese or Malaysian. Any ideas how could I find out?

For what it’s worth the V5C says “1 DECLARED NEW AT FIRST REGISTRATION” and that was in May 2001. Would someone be able to declare the car as new if it had been re-imported?

The service book that came with the car contains the VIN and the dealer service stamps with dates and mileages and these start 12/3/02 with 1,116 miles.

V8 Animal says odd the car has Aircon but that’s not listed. Well yes it does have an Aircon unit but when RT Racing brought in their Aircon man to look at it a few years back the best he could get it to do was blow out lukewarm air rather than hot air. So after that waste of money my Aircon has always been hood down.

I can confirm the rear plate is the normal rectangle and not square. There were no pictures of the rear end on the original ad as thought this was the worst view of the car. I didn’t realise the importance of this shot.

So what happened between 1996 and 2001? I’ve no idea and no idea how I can unearth this. All I know is she drives really well, isn’t perfect but is a very useable Tiv.

She’s for sale again now because the original ebay winner didn’t want to proceed and you can’t force someone to buy what they no longer want. I must confess it now looks like she’ll be mine for another six months as there doesn’t appear to be much selling at the moment.

Nice motor, had a look around it at the Griffin last week, would have introduced myself if I had seen its owner. May be worth having a word with Jack Smith, he is a great guy who used to own a Chim (which he took me for a blast in around K.L. back in 2001) which was very simular to yours, he is / was the international representitive of the TVR car club in Malaysia. He is also the uncle of Mrs Selnic.
tvrcc-malaysia@tvrcc.com is the address for him on the web site. Say that Nick sent you!

To confirm the year of manufacture , the VIN code gives the year with the latter digits......yB001nnn....(at the end) where y is the year code and nnn is the build no. in that year. y of 1 is 2001,6 2006, letters for pre 2000, but I've forgotten the sequence, someone else will no doubt know.. biggrin

I suppose you've had a word with nottm DVLA giving them the chassis and vin numbers etc.
HPI?
You don't say as to when you bought it and as to what milage it was at when you bought it.
The reason i ask is mines a 96 car and you'rs is also and it looks identicle but your milage 21k mine 59k but the condition of the engine bay does'nt stand up to that milage so i think there is some truth in the clocks being changed at some point.
Don't mean to sound rude.
