Thought I ought to say Hi!

Hi one and all.
I've already posted on on here but as I'm now seriously considering buying an older 156 to supplement my Elise I thought I ought to say 'Hello' properly
I've had exerience of a couple of Alfas: a 1978 Sud ti which I still argue is the best small car ever made (I bought that in 1980/81ish). Then a long gap before my other half and I bought an ex-demo 145 back in 1995. We had several years good service before the 145 gave way to an A3 in 2002 (which the missus still drives).
I'm not in a hurry to buy, I might wait until the end of the summer as the Elise is obviously at its best in warmer/dry weather, but be prepared for a barage of idiotic questions
So...................is the selespeed really as unreliable as claimed and how much to replace?
