Ive got a mk1 cab and it fits the bill nicely. Scuttle shake is so bad it’s actually funny, my car is a little lowered so this does not help. Fun to drive and if you get a good one then a) it wont cost you anything to keep on the road and b) you will sell it in a year or two for the same as what you bought it for.

There are a lot of tatty ones out there though (especially at this time of the year) and this site lists more things to check than I could be bothered to list!

If you want a pure driver’s car then you need a tin top, but the cab is great for a summer cruise. N22nck is right though, mine too tends to leak in the rain when the wind blows, even with a new roof. Mines in a garage for good reason.

For me the best thing about a MK1 cab is its ‘everyman ness’. I’ve had 8yearolds shout ‘nice car mate’ to me and the Max Power boys I bump into around Leicester give me a wave, and if I meet a middle aged bloke (like me!) then they normally say ‘I wanted one of them with I was 18 but could not afford the insurance”. You wont experience any nasty envy with a golf cab, not something you could say about a BMW cab….

I love mine, just getting it ready for the summer with a new 2ltr 16v engine.

Great noise as a standard gti, full stainless exhaust and chopped airbox. Still surprisingly fast compared to modern metal and handle well (dependent on suspension condition) for a ragtop.

Brakes are shocking, really really bad and they are never good until you upgrade to larger brakes.

Apart from that, make sure it’s clean and tidy, has a good roof that doesn’t leak too much and you’ll be on to a winner.
