You more or less can't. The element is extremely sensitive to contamination and more or less anything you do to it is certain to throw it out of calibration.

I thought I heard it was a thin piano wire that can easily snap or bend causing it to be way out.

Look at this about 2/3rds of the way down - it shows whats inside the V8 airflow meter and just how small the sensor is.
