After driving about for an afternoon, how long should it take for the trickle charger to 'show' a green light to indicate the battery is full again?

I am getting a bit paranoid as my battery got drained a few monts ago and the trickle charger took two days to load the battery again and now it takes at least 4 to 5 hours after I have been driving around.

Maybe the battery is on the way out, maybe not, I am a total numpty with electrickery.

Hi Cloggy, Im no expert but once you've deep drained the battery thats pretty much the end of its life. In my experience driving around for an afternoon should give you a fully charged battery. I killed a battery a while back by fully discharging it (must get that headlights on warning buzzer!) and it wouldnt hold a decent charge afterwards.

Where did you get your new one and did they change/install it for you?

If the battery is almost discharged and you try and start the car, or use a lot of current, it can damage the innner plates so it wont hold the charge.

Only just noticed this question...better late than never ! Type 072 battery from halfords , make sure you get the one with about 550 CCA (they do a low power on of the same type which wont do the job). I popped over to topcats and they changed it for me in 20 minutes for a few quid :-)

Thanks, I replaced mine with a Bosch S40 27 S4 (630 crank rating) at my local MOT station and they fitted it for free too.
I did it just for the Dutch trip 2 weeks ago, I did not want to get stuck on the ferry or in Holland.
