Hello peeps,

Is there a simple way to draw a plain, un-filled rectangle in Elements 6, without resorting to drawing a filled one then deleting the middle of it, or using 4 individual lines? I've found the "stroked" option for the vector shapes but it gives you rounded corners rather than sharp ones. The other options seem to give you bevelled edges, shadows, 3D effects... anything, in fact, other than a plain unfilled box.

I was trying to put a thin black line around a photo last night before printing it out (with a gap between line and photo), browsed the help files for ages, gave up in the end and used MS Word instead.....

I can't believe there's not an easy way!

Thanks

If I read you right you're trying to add a border then?

There's a tutorial for PS here http://www.ehow.com/how_6395_add-border-picture.ht... Not sure if it's the same in Elements but if you either google 'add border photoshop elements' or look in the help file, that should sort you out.

That's good - you've made the middle beach hut collapse as well!

Yes, exactly like that (thanks) - takes 2 seconds in any program I've ever tried to use until last night! How's it done in Elements 6 then please? smile

Ok, open image.

Go:
IMAGE - RESIZE - CANVAS SIZE

Box opens. Under width, type in 1 (cm). Under height, 1 (cm)

Where it says CANVAS EXTENSION COLOR, make sure it says WHITE (there is a drop down menu)

Click OK and you'll get a white border appear.

Now again, IMAGE - RESIZE - CANVAS SIZE

This time, use about .3 for width, and .3 for height.

CANVAS EXTENSION COLOR, click drop down menu and select BLACK.

A thin black border will now appear.

Repeat stage one again with the white border, and this time make it about 2 or 3 cm width and height.

Naturally you can vary the width of the white and black border by increasing or decreasing the cm values. Always make sure the width and height values are the same.

Hope this makes sense!!

Many thanks for that - a nice way of doing what I was trying to do.

It's still not drawing an unfilled rectangle though (being pedantic!) which I still hope would be possible! For example, I might want to inset the black box so it's over the top of the image?

Many thanks,

Ruari
