Just picked up a Dec 04 A3 3.2 dsg and loving it. The car has 49k on the clock and had the gearbox and diff oils changed at 40k.

I am a little concerned about a vibration/humming noise that I am getting when the car engages the next gear when under gentle throttle. It doesn't happen as much when the everything is warmed up and it doesn't do it when under heavy load.

Is this a known problem or just a trait of the gearbox?

Mine doesn't do it, so I'd say it's not normal.

Not heard of this one yet. Is this a common problem?

Thanks

Only ever seen it once but it was under similar circumstances, had the box out etc and turned out it was just a driveshaft.

I think it merely needs a good thrashing. Chuck it in S mode and do a few launches....should soon sort it.

But seriously.....could be the flywheel? Have you got a Audi warranty?

I bought it recently and with a warranty direct policy on it. The problems is very slight and was probably not noted by either the previous owner or the company that I bought it from. I am bothered by it because I owned an e class beforehand (which eternally broke down) with gearbox issues. I would not like to go back to the supplyer of the Audi re the problem unless it is a major issue as I part exchanged the merc which was falling to bits.

Warranty direct unlikely to cover as only just bought the car and they will argue the problem existed at purchase. It is being seen by a specialist on Thursday (Pitstop in Newcastle) so fingers crossed it is a driveshaft and not the gearbox. This is what the specialist believed the problem might be. If it is more substantial than that then it I may have to go back to the supplier ie if £5k gearbox!

I can get it to vibrate between 1250-2000 revs in all gears. It is a very gentle vibration and is coming through the steering wheel aswell. The car is going into a specialist tomorrow so will give you an update.

The problem has been identified as worn front differential bearings (the ones at the rear of the front diff). The cost of replacing is being costed by the specialist. I will be going back to the supplying trader for the cost.
