metros, honda vtechs, motor bike engines etc there are many engines you can use you just have to make it fit ie fabricate somekind of frame ( you can get a yamy R1 kit ready to fit i believe).

as for sound proofing you can do all that inside to make it a more peacfull ride but why do that, nothing better than the sound of a nice engine and exhaust (no stereo system for my mini just engine roar) but that my own preference. good luck.

Surely insurance would be of an issue at 17? It was for me with a standard 1000!

I have seen some with Integra Type E engines. Good fast, and reliable swap, I would assume.

Hi been lurking and watching on the mini forum for months now, having owned a couple of mini coopers and an 'S' in the 70's and 80's and then got rid of them because of family commitments, i am now in a position to buy/build myself a toy.

Have been toying with the idea of getting a mini to build from scratch but going down the retro road with a tendency to fit a non standard engine. From my experience in the distant past i can remember reading about some people fitting the old Cosworth BDA 1600 twin cam engine, i do know that it is possible to run with the A series gearbox, via and adapter plate. My question is, do any of the regular forum pundits know of anyone who has already done this conversion or know of any books that give info on it? Am really interested to hear from anyone with any detail.

I am aware that the engines are like the proverbial rocking horse st, but im willing to go for the right one when it appears, as they sometimes do.

plumo

there are a couple of ways of doing this, one involves a special one piece crank which will allow the mini flywheel to fit straight on. there is also a adaptor that can be bolt to the ford crank - these are nothing but trouble.

if you find a proper kit with the one peice crank its well worth buying.

Isn't it far cheaper to do an A-Series with BMW Bike K-Series 16V head or a KAD 16V A-series rather this p!ssing about with rare and archaic piecs of Keith Duckworth's Finest hehe

It's not like the bottom ened is the problem is it? hehe

The BMW conversion is the thing - all that grunt under a standard round nose front and bonnet. Total sleeper.

The BMW conversion is the one to go for - all that grunt under a standard round nose front and bonnet. A total sleeper.

Not really looking for cheapness, as money isnt too much of a problem, i just want something different and maybe a track car too. Its just a love affair from many years ago and wonder if i could turn a dream into a reality.

Theres a bare 8 port head on the Bay of E at the present, think its up to about 500 quid already and still some time to go.

Yes old-school probably is the word, its what i like and thats what i will have.

I live opposite an old boy who seeing me tinkering with cars bought some old black and white photos over of a heavily modified mini him and his mate campaigned in the Gerry Marshall era, it did have a ford lump in the front, and they did do quite well with it. I cant remember whether it was a BDA but he also had some old motoring news cutouts of its exploits. I know he also has quite a few bits as he bought an old cooper race head over to show me. I can ask him if he has any info or contacts.

Cheers

Have a pic somewhere of a mini at Croft in the 70's with either a Ford or was it a Jag engine in the front........seem to remember it was red with a yellow roof but there again I may be mistaken, it was a long time ago.

Hi Joe T

I would appreciate if you could ask for info or contacts into the conversion
