I wonder if one of you fine people may be able to help me find an elegant way of doing this.

I've recently built a media centre in the front room, which is my music and video source, as well as CD/DVD/Blu-Ray player.

One of the nice things I thought I could do would be to run a slide show of photos on the big screen.

The box itself runs Vista, and I'm using the Media Centre bits of it to do this.

It appears that Vista (and indeed XP) do not read the exif data concerning orientation of the picture, and so display everything in landscape. This is most annoying.

I have several options;
1) Manually go through god knows how many photos and adjust.
2) Script (1) from the Linux box and retransfer
3) Use something like Picasa to export all of the photos to webpages in sufficient quality (basically (2) with a resize involved)
4) Throw Vista away, burn the discs in the street and jump on them.

Just on the off chance, before I leap into this - does anyone know of a plug in or extension for media centre that means it uses the data and displays the shot correctly?

Is it actually EXIF data? I can rotate images CW or CCW but AFAIK it doesn't change the EXIF data.

Might be wrong though.

Pretty sure it's in the exif data. I don't want Vista/Media centre to touch the data, I just want it to read it and orient the picture correctly when displaying.

Can't answer your exact question but I can provide an elegent alternative...
XBMC displays images rotated according to the exif header info and will stream off of whatever networked device you have stored your pictures on. Mid slideshow you can also rotate/zoom/pan/display exif info. Only downside is it doesn't fully support HD. Though I guess you might be able to output stills to HD. Can't be sure as I don't do HD yet. Current market price for an Xbox(1) £19.99 and £9.99 for the DVD remote - job done!

Indeed. And my Xbox360 works just fine as well I think.

We already have an Xbox running XBMC - it's been retired as the new media box should be doing everything it can do and more besides.

I basically want 2 boxes under the TV. The media centre, and the Amp. Everything else has been retired....

...I'm starting to suspect I may need to un-retire some kit... frown

I'll only retire XBMC when I'm forced to because of the HD limitations.

One of the early XBMC developers started an alternative project for Windows. Might be worth a look?

Getting Vista to do anything other than crash is a bonus in my book.

Good luck

I'm being reminded why all the machines I have to do real work do not run MS.

Because they aren't able to install the best most usable OS correctly?

Not tried OSX on it actually.
