Has anyone successfully managed to use an LS7 without the catalysts in a kit, or is that going to be a complete no no with the current legislation?

I understand that a lot of LS7's are used in Ultimas so thought I would ask the question here.

Obviously LS7's aren't going to get past using the pre 93 block exemption, so how does one use an LS7 in a kit and get is past SVA nowadays?

They have 2 or 4 lambda input for the ecu which takes care of the management. I don't think cats are needed. Even my old saab can scrape through without it's catsmile if given a tweak. I know of an ls1 ultima that's road legal and it hasn't got cats fitted.

I have a stock LS2 with a magnacharger and it made 578hp 555ft/lb with stock cast iron manifolds and stock 2.5" vette cats...

This system is California smog compliant - will pass Euro 4 also.

I think you will find it has to have cats.
Will look through the SVA regs tonight and see if I can find the required wording.

Yes they do a Cat Test, not only just to check emissions but to check if Cats are fitted.... spoke to the tester once, and he said there have been a few people that tried to fool them as In Cat lookalike boxes but with nothing in them. They check for Certain emissions that can tell them if there there or not.....

... I dont understand why you wouldnt use them.... there's LOADS of power there and the tiny bit that you lose will be unnoticeable anyway.

Well I have to admit a likely problem with space. Although I'm posting in the ultima section because I've been advised you guys are likely to have the most experience, the car that I am contemplating putting one in is a GT40 variant.

Is it a UK car? If so there are some people I know at Horncastle who have installed an ls1 into a GT40 which they are marketing. I'll get you the details if you want them.

Actually the cars not built yet. I saw a aluminium chassis RSR GT40 at the detling show. I was very impressed with the KIT quality, and I reckon I'm pretty hard to impress. smile

I'm now doing my homework looking at importing a RSRGT40 from the US with all the hassle that seems to entail (Some 27% tax likely eek), and while contempating a small block ford 302 stroker, and talking to a very helpful company owner, he happened to mention the ability of the kit to take an LS7, and his ability to supply that coupled to a ZF.

I hadn't thought about it as an engine, as I assumed the weight and size would make it impractical. However the more I read about the LS7, the more I become surprised that its not that heavy, or that big.

All in all I can't stop salivating, but there seem to be some hurdles to see my way through before taking the plunge, I found out in the past that doing the homework at this stage is worth ten times the amount to effort than when you are in the middle of a build. The current question is how to pass an SVA with it. At times when my head wrestles control from my heart there seem to be some very nice examples of GT40 for sale in this country, I feel I might be paying a heavy premium for getting the ultimate kit to build, as the resale is unlikely to reflect anywhere near the cost. The question is what personal cost do you put on building the thing the way you want, and having a 2400lb car with 500 bhp on tap smile.

I feel I've now gone beyond the original question and am bunging up the Utlima forum with stuff not interesting to them, so I'll happily take your link if possible for a compare and to try and get more info. smile

Fran isn't missing the point. He knows I want to build. I believe he makes the RSR40 kit. Which is why he's trying to point me in the right direction. smile

Question is that GT40 in the advert has no visible cats, and looks like a 07 build with a LS7. In fact everything I want to do. Question is how. I think a few phone calls are in order.

I take that all back, looking at the wrong photo. The cats are there smile

I don't know who James is but the car makers I know are GT40Supercars.com (GT 40 Supercars Ltd) at Horncastle, 01507 578791. Ask for Alan or Andy Waters, they may be able to help. The blue GT40 in the link looks like one of theirs.

Hi, thanks for the link Boosted, I bow to your knowledge on all things LS, but it states on their enquires screen that due to health and safety reasons they don't supply kits frown. So I don't think they'd be too keen to just give out info to someone who wanted to build their own.

I didn't notice that but they may be willing to impart some advice and be a source for parts at a later date. You never know, I'd make that call if I were you. Mention me if you like, that may get you 2 minutes of time.smile

Lets put it this way boosted. Are you over six foot tall.

If so you'd better be prepared to like a semi recumbant driving style. smile

There is a twin tube centre roll at head height which would seem to be better as a thicker single tube for those of us who are.

I sat in the one at the detling show. Luckily the pedal box seems to have an almost endless ability to dissapear down the driver footwell.
