Recently started fixing up an old W reg Mini HL 1000. For starters it appears to have an ignition problem, which I thought I had remedied by drying the distributor and giving the HT connections a dose of lube. However, after warming up the car I then put it in reverse to move it and it immediately stalled. The starter then woulnd't even turn, however gave it a couple of minutes and then tried again and it started, then as before as I put in gear the engine stalled again, any ideas on what the problem might be?

No it's first as well, good point, it actually stalls as I select the gear rather than when I let out the clutch.

Check out the cables from the battery to the front of the car and the block thay connect to. It sounds more like an electrical connection problem than an ignition problem. Hope this helps and I would be intrested to find out what it was in the end.
