So. For around a grand one could have the 12mpx D2X/s or the 12Mpx D300.

D300 is brand new with groovier autofocus and live view.

D2X is used but has pro build quality ande audio recording.

Both support a GPS interface and will stamp images with lat/long (I need this).

Given it will be used for landscape, wildlife and motorsport photography, undergo a fairly tough outdoor life and have to geostamp images...thoughts?

D3 out of the question, sadly.

You can use old/stty lens' with the d300 as its got a fine-tuning option for their focus, even new stuff can be way out so that alone makes it worth more in my book, then it performs better at high ISO and has a better auto focus system for fast moving objects.

You'd be off your rocker to buy a D2x in fairness.

Most reviews I've read say that the D300 will take better photos, but is not as bomb proof as the D2X

Personally, I think I'll sell the D2X and still haven't decided between the D300 / D3 (depends on my next cheque)

Except of course, mine looks like it's been dragged through a Scottish hedge every day for three years - and has taken a sqillion frames, so is virtually worthless. (Which is the main reason I need a new camera, as this one is really on it's last legs)

teacher I'll have it - if you're throwing it away. I shall come up and do some "dumpster-diving" when you're out!

No - that's pretty serious for a sub three year old pro spec!

Surely you cannot risk anything less than a D3?
You can buy 3 D300s for a D3 wink

I just had the same query, D2X or D300? I went with the D300. My thinking, and it seems many others, is todays technology must be better than 3 year old 2X technology. As someones already mentioned, the focusing, metering, and the general build must have improved over those years. Also, assuming the D2X are used by serious photographers who take a lot of pictures, surely you'd just be buying a heavily used piece of kit, which will have taken all the knocks and bangs that it would get in that time.

I went with the D300, but you pay your money and your make your choice. I can only see the vertical grip all ready included in the d2x as its advantage. Good luck with your choice.

well, yea but no but

I'd have to sell all my DX lenses and buy more full frame jobbies. So D3 plus 3 lesnes = >£10k yikes

Decided to go with a D2X in the end. I have DX lenses I will use with it and I have a particular purpose in mind. I also got something of a bargain (it wasn't expensive for a camera with less than 20,000 actuations).

Now to get a GPS connector...

D3 works with DX lenses. Just crops itself.

Neat feature that smile only possible downside I can see is that its only 5MP when using DX lenses, might be an issue for some users. Nice to have the option though smile

Cheers.

Yea I know, but it's pointless having a 12 mp full frame sensor and then only using about half the pixels! Hence I'd have to buy more lenses.

For what it's worth - £440 for a 28-70 is an absurd bargain. It's a stonking lens.
